technicaly if your going for bang for buck nothing beats the ksc75's but i do agree the grado's are great sub $100 headphones. i'v got early 90's sr60's
also for portible i'v got a set of jvc fx66's (air cushions) which are quite nice.
my home listening is on ultrasone Proline 2500
and as for the dac thing it takes a digital signal and converts it into an analogue signal. which then can be amped and used to run audio equipment. thats all a dac dose. their main aplication is to provide a higher grade of analouge signal than most computer soundcards can produce. ie lower SNR thus less noise in the signal. the average noise floor is around -80db where some of the high end dac's can produce over -120db
