This!

technicaly if your going for bang for buck nothing beats the ksc75's but i do agree the grado's are great sub $100 headphones. i'v got early 90's sr60's

also for portible i'v got a set of jvc fx66's (air cushions) which are quite nice.

my home listening is on ultrasone Proline 2500

and as for the dac thing it takes a digital signal and converts it into an analogue signal. which then can be amped and used to run audio equipment. thats all a dac dose. their main aplication is to provide a higher grade of analouge signal than most computer soundcards can produce. ie lower SNR thus less noise in the signal. the average noise floor is around -80db where some of the high end dac's can produce over -120db

My only complaint with grados, is the shrieking highs, as far as i know.. no other headphone does this. Apparently the MS-1 or MS-2 doesn't have this problem and are exactly the same as the grado counterpart, even built by grado. Apparently the Sennheiser's HD series is a close alternative to grado.

I unfortunately noticed that my 'local' headphone center had got a pair of HD800's... I'm tempted to bring my Gilmore and take a listen to them, despite my instincts telling me no. Or just for the shock factor, design a personal desk heater that doubles as a amp, and bring that instead.

12 years ago i bought a Stax Lambda 303 System (the succeeding product model is now in stores for 1400 EUR). One of the best headphones ever, but i sold them a few years later. The reason was that i got new speakers and it was in almost every case more fun to listen to music through speakers. Even if they are good, they are still headphones (and quite uncomfortable as well: when i moved my head, the Stax was creaking). I used the HD 555 after that, because they were good enough, quite cheap and very comfortable to wear.

Now i'm living in a smaller room and can't use my speakers as they are supposed to, it's not so much fun anymore and i can't listen at high volume. I considered buying a HD 800, too, but after reading some reviews and remembering the Stax i decided that a used HD 650 for 200 EUR will be a much better decision. It's affordable, but much better than the 555. Even if the HD 800 is as good as the Stax (what i doubt), it won't justify the price of about 800-1000 EUR. I think very expensive headphones just don't pay off for most people, good speakers in an appropriate room are (almost) always better.

B&W P5s. The best in terms of sound quality and comfort for long periods of listening.

Thought I would mention... I had a little money from my birthday so I bought a pair of Monster Turbines. Am enjoying them very much. If you're not a fan of bass, don't buy these. But, I have to say, while the bass is HEAVY with these, it doesn't seem to recess the mids or highs. To me, it's like having a subwoofer in your headphones. I got them off Amazon for under $100 which, to me, seems very reasonable. Normally, I wouldnt buy anything with Monster's name on it, but, I like these a lot. Very fun to listen to. Like all earphones that go into your ear canal, getting a proper fit and seal is paramount. Luckily, these come with multiple tips. I ordered a set of gel/foam tips to try out as well. Ghost sounds awesome in these!!!

SO, long story short, ive been wanting to purchase a new set of headphones, ive spent about two weeks reading a plethora of reviews, chiefly on head-fi.org and such sites.

i want over-ear, closed, good bass, decent price, and my search narrowed down to the audio-technica's ATH-M50(s)

has anybody had experience with said brand, and (hopefully) more especifically with that particular model?

OR experience with a good pair of cans in general?

im open to ANYTHING wink wink

Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro. Best headset I've tried. Comfortable for long sessions of listening, completely closed, amazing sound and frequency response. I hear shit in those that I can't with any other system or headset. I don't know how different that is from the ones you posted, money-wise.

Anyone know of a decent portable flac player?
I know of the sansa fuze, but am looking for something with more storage.
I owned 2 Cowon players and they are great, but difficult to get around here.
