As far as differentials for how the science-fiction based game is played, honestly as mediocre as Too Human was, it certainly was attempting to try something different with the genre. I'm just tired of people playing it safe all the time in the games industry, and that definitely includes my employer as well.

It's not like I didn't love Mass Effect.I love the galaxy that was created, I mean my favorite thing across all media are well-fleshed out, fully conceptualized worlds/universe. I will use the storyline to push me through the game, but I'm reaching wits end on space based future shooters when it comes to gameplay. In my eyes, the shooter has kinda reached that critical maximum platformers had 15 years ago. It's not like Klonoa wasn't amazing back in the day, but something that brought something more to the table like Tomba is more revered in my memory. If that analogy makes any sense to you...

Calling me young? I distinctly remember the days before disc based gaming and the transition into it. Old school platformers died out, look at the Crash Bandicoot series. Huge on PS1 and had ok success on PS2, but they dont sell today. People got tired of the cartoony look of them and got tired of jumping from platform to platform to get to the top of a level.

That being said, it does get incredibly repetitive playing the same 4 maps on MW2 (because that's all it ever rotates it seems) and dealing with 12 year olds who think they are the shit and yell swears at you because mommy was too busy fucking the pool boy to care.

I'm all for innovation in games, Mirror's Edge is one of the most fun and original games I've played in the past few years, I've beaten it 4 times and one of those times was in recent months. I've actually been playing the "Serious Sam" games lately because I miss the days of arcade style shooters.

I never played Klonoa or Tomba because at the time I was more interested in the survival horror genre(remember when Resident Evil was about zombies and had horrible dialogue but good atmosphere? Well it still has one of those things today...)

Loading games from tapes was annoying, wasn't it. Damn tape drive for my Atari liked to spat out errors after 20 minutes of loading. Those were the times, young 'uns ave it easy.

I miss not having load screens...the one true plus-side to using game cartridges. Even though today's consoles are finding ways to disguise load screens, they're still there and some games are hindered due to lengthy or numerous load times (such as Bayonetta on the PS3).

Wasn't calling you young, just calling the lack of innovation in gameplay these days similar to how it was 15 years ago is all.

Shit, I'm in no position to be calling anyone young.

And yes, Tomba was amazing.

They're working on a patch for Bayonetta that should improve loading times.

This pleases me. After doing a quick search on the Googles just now, its looking like the patch provides an install option. Thats cool and all, but with my humble 40GB hard drive already having some other game installs on it, my free space is dwindeling. One problem fixed, another arises.

You can easily stick a 2TB drive in your PS3 though, if you want :)

Well things go in cycles. I do agree the gaming industry is at a major stand still in the innovation department, mainly because everyone is too busy finding ways to beat MW2, Halo 3, and GTA4 for rights of "who can make the most money out of a game"...reminds me of Hollywood actually.

Look at games like Mirror's Edge and Portal. Both first person games but both do things different than the norm. Yes Mirror's Edge had a shooting element, but it was entirely possible to finish the game without shooting anyone (there's an achievement for it). Portal was originally designed by an indie studio of college students who got picked up by Valve. Notice how one of the best rated and best overall games out there was made by a small studio who just needed good funding. I give Valve props for picking them up, put I really dont want to get into how I feel about Valve yet again.

I've been toying with the idea of upgrading the HDD in my PS3 for some time now...sooner would probably be better than later. Have you done it yourself?

Nope I don't have a Playstation. I've replaced the harddrive in my old Xbox though, and apparently the PS3 is a piece of cake compared to that. Just backup your savegames and such somehow.

Absolutely. So I guess you can understand my frustration with Mass Effect 2 then. I was hoping it would diverge more down the RPG path, it chose the shooter path. Maybe a halfway compromise with a Bioware take on the VATS system.

It's definitely an RPG, just a more simplified one than the last game, in some ways. The fact that you have to upgrade items and your ship and collect resources makes it feel like an MMO that has a great story but you play by yourself.

Overall I'd say Mass Effect 2 is definitely a game to be played if you enjoyed the first one, Knight of the Old Republic, or just like the futuristic space setting.

To be honest, the vast majority of developers aren't in a position to do anything innovative. With budgets as high as they are, developers need to make games that will make a guaranteed return. The vast majority of developers don't have the level of independence from a publisher, that would allow them to create something truly innovative, and the vast majority of publishers won't fund something that isn't a definite hit.

Well, hope always lies in Capcom, it spends a great deal of its time being daring. Of course, it's a massive company that spends even more of its time nursing old flagship series', so they're not really at any risk of bankruptcy, although most of those flagships, in quality if not in sales, are either dead or dying (although Megaman seems to be a bit of a zombie now, sup with that?)

Again, I just rush in in the middle of a serious and interesting conversation, just to say that
I got myself a new game!!

Looking forward to play this.

A lot.
Desmond isn't too interesting, but Altaïr is very, very interesting.
Hehe :p
