In all seriousness Nathan, I think I understand what you mean.
I was looking over some Hubble photos just a few days ago and my mind felt like it was going to explode, trying to comprehend the vastness and complexity of life, the universe and everything. The problem with being human (or at least a sentient being at our level of awareness and development) is that we are at a stage where we are becoming aware of the incomprehensibility of our surroundings, but dont have the means to explain most of it yet.
Say you look at a truly minute fragment of space and see countless galaxies in our field of view. If you really understand the size of a single galaxy, let alone the number of good restaraunts in say Melbourne or New York, how in the hell are you supposed to wrap your feeble mind around the image before you?
Short answer is it's impossible.
Many use religion to explain it and that's their choice.
If you really, really, really feel like you need to pursue the subject, can I suggest you get involved in science at a more involved level? Either formally or informally, perhaps study what fascinates you most (eg dark matter, black holes) and assist in the accumulation of knowledge. If you don't feel like academic study is for you, don't let it put you off. You can also learn and study on your own. Buy books. Look skyward. As mentioned, get involved with SETI yourself... hugely worthy thing to do.
Personally, I dropped a few hints and Santa must have been listening as I got my first telescope for Christmas. Either that or my wife told him what I wanted!
As soon as circumstances permit I will be gazing skyward, trying to see all I can. From there, who knows?
Point is, don't become lost in the overwhelming size of it all. Pick your battles and genuinely contribute to the sum total of knowledge. It may be feeble as we'll probably be gone before we can pass the knowledge on to anyone other than other humans, but you are what you are... both the most insignificant speck in existance, and the most infinitely complex and important being imaginable. Which is a thought that I reckon kicks some massive arse.
Hope that drivel helps!
