Talk about whatever you want to here, but stay correct

In all seriousness Nathan, I think I understand what you mean.

I was looking over some Hubble photos just a few days ago and my mind felt like it was going to explode, trying to comprehend the vastness and complexity of life, the universe and everything. The problem with being human (or at least a sentient being at our level of awareness and development) is that we are at a stage where we are becoming aware of the incomprehensibility of our surroundings, but dont have the means to explain most of it yet.

Say you look at a truly minute fragment of space and see countless galaxies in our field of view. If you really understand the size of a single galaxy, let alone the number of good restaraunts in say Melbourne or New York, how in the hell are you supposed to wrap your feeble mind around the image before you?

Short answer is it's impossible.

Many use religion to explain it and that's their choice.

If you really, really, really feel like you need to pursue the subject, can I suggest you get involved in science at a more involved level? Either formally or informally, perhaps study what fascinates you most (eg dark matter, black holes) and assist in the accumulation of knowledge. If you don't feel like academic study is for you, don't let it put you off. You can also learn and study on your own. Buy books. Look skyward. As mentioned, get involved with SETI yourself... hugely worthy thing to do.

Personally, I dropped a few hints and Santa must have been listening as I got my first telescope for Christmas. Either that or my wife told him what I wanted! As soon as circumstances permit I will be gazing skyward, trying to see all I can. From there, who knows?

Point is, don't become lost in the overwhelming size of it all. Pick your battles and genuinely contribute to the sum total of knowledge. It may be feeble as we'll probably be gone before we can pass the knowledge on to anyone other than other humans, but you are what you are... both the most insignificant speck in existance, and the most infinitely complex and important being imaginable. Which is a thought that I reckon kicks some massive arse.

Hope that drivel helps!

Seeing a picture like this:

Image

And knowing that each of those spiral objects is in fact a Galaxy, and then knowing every galaxy has billions of stars is mind-numbing.

The fact that we cant even leave our Solar System is sad to me, considering the fact that there are trillions and trillions (or more) of stars out there we will never, ever reach.

I think this is how I will cope from now on. Image It's not as if I have any pride left.

Yes we will.

Non-euclidean. A strait line is not the fastest way from one point to another. Where will two parallel lines intersect?

Revolution of consciousness is needed on the entire earth. People should demand answers from the goverment. Those bastards know about life on another planets from years, but they're afraid to tell you that, so they can keep control.

What keeps us feel like in prison is their lies and our ignorance.

Even though this could end up badly I just have to ask.

Are you serious?

I had a huge piece of text written about this and I was just about to click the post button when my laptop crashed. Fucking shithead laptop. What I essentially said was that:
Abydost wrote:I just ignore it. Would be silly to try to understand the universe when I can't even figure out what to do with my own life.

is mostly how I look at the universe.

I feel privileged to know what I know; I love that immense infernos are suspended throughout infinity because miraculously gravity holds them together as huge chemical units. I love that there is one which is the essence of our existence because once upon a time before time as we know it began, there was some sort of explosion which resulted in huge particles of debris orbiting around a central axis which we now know to be our sun. I love that our particular ball of rock was orbiting in a place where it attained optimum conditions; the required criteria for our sustenance. I love that life emerged, and changed and ended and rejuvenated and flourished. I love that we now metabolise, maintain homeostasis, possess a capacity to grow, respond to stimuli, reproduce and, through natural selection, adapt to our environment due to the fact that we thrive where there are facilities to perform all of these functions. I love that we're here and we have no idea why.

I can't understand certain things about other human beings; that bothers me a lot more than not knowing about the alien universe out there. Religiousness is a particularly intriguing lifestyle choice. I mean, when you consider all of the things which I said above are true (and acknowledge that they are all factually correct and have been scientifically proven to be true using dendrochronology, astronomy, carbon dating, geology and various other reliable tools); it seems as though any omniscient being wouldn't really fit in. Considering how immense the universe is (eh... infinite), something like this was bound to happen eventually, and probably will happen or has happened again in some weird way. Existential flaws and ambiguity too prevalent prevent my rational side from ever being able to adhere to something like a set of religious beliefs. It doesn't even make any sense, because this "creator" was supposedly corresponding with humans centuries prior to this one and now that all of the discrepancies in their prophets "teachings" are coming to light; people still cling pathetically to the nice parts of the religions.

So yeah, this post is shit in comparison with the other one that got deleted... but in response to the thread, I cope by appreciating what I do know and realising that anything I don't is neither relevant to my life nor is it necessary for my enjoyment of life. If I didn't know it yesterday, then I probably won't need to know it tomorrow either.

These days our government/civil service staff can't keep a fart secret so I don't really believe they are intellectually capable of that much conspiracy. You're doing well if you find one that knows how to spell. :P

That's best part of conspiracy theories. World is full of fail, stupid fuckups and lack of competence occur everywhere all the time, ESPECIALLY in big organisations, yet there has to be massive worldwide conspiracy which somehow can work without a hitch. Why at least our damn health service can't work this way, maybe they should employ more lizard-people.

You're right.

It's something higher than goverment. Perhaps a banking and science elites that sometimes run the whole countries and actualy are above stupid people from the government.

Maybe the UFO phenomenon is just a advanced human technology, who knows... almost every big country have some secrets.
