Neurosis sounds like ... well it depends on the period really. They started otu a touch on the generic noisy hardcore (or is it technically punk) side. Then they started incorporating sludgy + psychadelic elements and got more adventurous from there on out.
If you like brutal music, I'd say go for Through Silver in Blood it's heavy both in terms of sound and emotionally. The more recent stuff like The Eye of Every Storm really kept the emotional intensisty but was much more mellow musically (which I attributed to a heavy Swans influence even before the Jarboe thing).
They're one of the few bands I really dig on the catalog of. No matter what they do-sludgy near-doom core, Swans-ish dirges- it's done well.
As for the Jarboe collaboration... it pissed me off. You see, I like and respect women. But Jarboe sets the cause back by sucking horrifically whenever not paired with a man. The album's good but for the love of everything... do NOT let it make you track down her solo material. If you want something good from her, find Sacrificial Cake. Hell, if you dig on Neurosis you really ought to check out Swans anyhow so look up Various Failures.

I'm currently not buying anything as my birthday is 3 weeks away and most people will be buying me cd's in that time, and it always annoys me when i go to buy someone something then they go and buy themselves it just before their birthday, grrrr...hence why I will be good

so do you like it? Have you had the chance to listen to Geisterfaust yet? I can tell you if their music gets even more minimal than that then their next Album will be 60 minutes of silence.
