I think about that quote in your signature sometimes. When I listen to Destroy Erase Improve, those words pop up in a song or two. I wonder if Devy was actually referring to Meshuggah. ?

Doubt it, but I wonder.

My signature? Mine is from Rational Gaze, from Meshuggah's Nothing album.

Justin Chancelors tone on 10000 Days is probably my favourite bass tone, although i dont use it i love the shit outta it. (too clanky for me)
Devys tone kicks ass in everything but HAARHT but i havent heard the reissue.
Dino Cazares always has absolute killer tone.
The Boys from Muse both have awesome tones.
The Meshuggah fellas tone on Catch 33 is awesome too, very different as it doesent have too mutch of that tube sound.

Crowbar - sonic excess in it's purest form (Kirk Windstein)
Pantera - vulgar display of power (Dimebag)
SYL - city (Devy)
Alice In Chains - dirt (Jerry Cantrell)
Fear Factory - demanufacture

I actually own a Randall RG100ES and a RG100HT head. The same amp heads that Dimebag used back in the day. Crowbar use them too. They sound very brutal when boosted with an OD pedal. Dimebag used alot of equalization with his though, so i can't quite get his sound, but i can get close.

Annihilator - Waking The Fury
Really buzzy, thin, digital tone that I'm told most people hate. I love it though-- At least on this album. It sounds great played LOUD, but you also hear more of the buzz when it's quiet... I can't get enough of it.

Destruction - The Antichrist
THRASH! Best thrash tone ever. That's about all I can say.

Textures - Polars
I LOVE this tone! Rich, 'soft' feeling tone (not soft as in not heavy... it's hard to describe) with just the right amount of crunch... It's just rich enough without sacrificing any clarity.

Exodus - Shovel Headed Kill Machine
Sounds like sharp, jagged, rusty metal scraping down your spine. The most menacing, metallic tone I've ever heard.

Devolved - Technologies
This tone has a bit of that fuzz to it (just slightly reminiscent of the first tone I mentioned), but has more meat and crunch to it. It's just very pleasing to my ears. :P

Ministry - Rio Grande Blood
Okay, so there are a few different tones throughout this album (haha, I miss the more varied days of production  ), but the tone on the title track and Senor Peligro in particular are just crushing. Some of the best, noisiest thrash production ever.

Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor
...Or almost any tone on a record Andy Sneap produced, for that matter. He always leaves his mark. Some of the most rich, and for lack of a better word 'spicy' ( ) tones in metal.

Meatwagon - Left With Nothing
Comparable to the tone on Pantera's 'Vulgar Display Of Power', but with more crunch.

EDIT: Added links to tiny snippets of each tone in the names.
Also, I left out the obvious: I love the tones on just about all of Devin's releases. I didn't think I needed to include them, given where I'm posting this... :P

Fear Factory (Dino era)
Type O Negative (ok, not everyones cup of tea but its weird and i like it)
Dave Mustaine- Countdown to extinction, check out "this was my life" amazing tone which makes the notes blend perfectly
Dev- obviously, but he has many tones.
Korn- When they got rid of the fuzz sound and made "follow the leader"
Corrupted- holy fuck they are heavy
Neurosis- Eye of every storm

1. Dev - OM and Infinity
- the most original tone ever. I can hear one note and instantly know it's Devin's tone.
2. Whoever mentioned Eric Peterson's tone on Testament's The Gathering - damn straight. That Mesa tone is just so damn BEEFY.
3. The Sunlight Studios tone: early Entombed, early Katatonia, early Amorphis, etc. Skogsberg's analog tone is just so damn warm and buttery. I will always prefer Sunlight to Morrisound.
4. Dino Cazares - Fear Factory's Demanufacture. The invention of the industrial tone. Every industrial band since has ripped this tone off, from Red Harvest to Raunchy. Hell, the first time I heard City I thought, "Wow, someone sure likes Demanufacture."
5. Kenny Hickey and Peter Steele - Type O Negative. The masters of feedback and overpowering distortion. Somehow it just fits the dark, brooding atmospheres of the band's music perfectly.
6. Johan Reinholdz - Andromeda's Extension Of The Wish. The ultimate lead tone. Check out the opening riff of The Words Unspoken and the freakish solo following the intro of In The Deepest Of Waters. It also helps to be more talented at 20 than guitarists 10 years older than you. Johan is a freak in the best way.
7. Dev - City. Is there any need to explain this on this forum? :)
8. Mikael Ã…kerfeldt - Opeth's My Arms, Your Hearse. The 5150 tone is already badass enough, but his clean tone he got on this album was so damn GOOD. It cuts right through the mix and yet it's still gentle and soothing. That tone is a testament to the gorgeous sound of the Vox AC30 amps. It's the perfect counterbalance to the brutal side of the album.
9. Dwayne Boardman and Gary Griffith - Morgion's Solinari. Quite possibly the most crushing guitar tone ever recorded, although Sunn O))) may just top it.
10. Frederick Thorendal and Mårten Hagström - Meshuggah's Destroy Erase Improve and Chaosphere. Mårten's clean tone on Destroy is just so unique and the distortion on both albums is just so cold and mechanical. And then there's Thorendal's lead tone: riding that perfect balance between distorted and clean, with maybe a hint of chorus....?

By the way, the band Textures has somehow managed to PERFECTLY emulate Thorendal's lead tone, at least on Polars. I'm very curious to see what they do with their sophomore effert, that is, if it ever gets released. I've been waiting forever for The End to get a hold of it. Definitely for fans of both Meshuggah and DTB.

Dime also used not one, but TWO Rocktron Hush Super C noise reducers - one before the preamp and one after - to get a certain "vacuum"-like tone. This added a great deal to his unique sound.
