Talk about whatever you want to here, but stay correct

If I play it cool with a telephone interview tomorrow, I may be invited for an in-person interview, and with a bit of luck, a new and ideally better position of employment.

Small chance of success, but we'll see.

Good luck, yaw.

Good luck mate!

I was on an interview panel yesterday. I don't recommend it. Better than being the interviewee, but it's a grind.

Feel free to disregard these tips, but here's my two cents.

1. Try to control the nerves s best you can - not because it reflects badly on you at all (it just means you want the job!). More because it really does freeze up the ability to think about answers before you give them. Easier said than done, I know.

2. Talk yourself up. Too many people grossly undersell themselves. You don't want to lie, but you do want them to think they'd be mad not to hire you. For example, if you have ever provided tips/training/advice to newer colleagues, you therefore have excellent coaching skills.

3. Give examples of what you've done, rather than just say "I do this, that and the other". And focus on your role, rather than just what the team does. A CAR-type approach is good as it ensures you give the complete story for each example.

4. When people get nervous they often seem to latch on to one expression or sound, like "uuuuuuum", or "off the top of my head" or "sure, sure, sure". It's not even done consciously. But when you've been doing interviews all day, hearing someone say "off the top of my head" for an hour or two makes you want to take the top off their head.

5. Present well. To hell with being "true to yourself" or whatever. It's one day of your life, and presenting well can be the difference between first and second. I'm a pretty laid back person when it comes to attire, but I'm amazed at how people turn up for interviews these days.

Hardly ground-breaking tips, but it's fresh on my mind so I thought I'd share. Fingers crossed for you.

Thanks dudes. I suppose saying "Uuuuuuuuh, hmm" every three seconds also makes me look like Butthead trying to work out how to use a seat-belt, so I'll have to try and avoid that. :)

"Do you remember last Easter? Twelve months to the day? The Polymorph?"

"That's right! You were attacked by a killer Shami Kebab!"

"How can the same smeg happen to the same guy twice?"

"Last time it was hors d'oeuvres. This time, it's lunch."

Well, despite the interview going well and my nerves being kept in check, I do not have new employment in my immediate future. Mainly because they didn't have any positions that suit my attributes.

Still, they did mention that something more suitable may come up in the long-run and I was welcome to re-apply, so you never know. And I still have my current position to fall back upon for now.

That's positive. They obviously think you'd be an asset to them in the right position, and they care enough about keeping you not to shove you into any old job. Extremely encouraging :D

^Actually, it was a different company I had applied for. Still, the remote chance they might have something in future was encouraging. Thanks for the response, though.

Have made the decision to finally quit my job (that you've all been subjected to some of the woes of :D) and go full time brewery...ing? Sure, I'll go with that. A job with essentially free unlimited beer and the chance for me to eventually become a brewer sounds far superior to my current job situation where I'm pretty well taken advantage of and treated as a second class employee.

So, yeah. Putting in my resignation week after next (going on vacation next week, woo hoo Disney World! :))
