I don't know if a topic like this has been made in the past or not. I'm going to go with yes. But not recently from what I can see.
So tell me folks, have any of you had any luck with getting your friends into the Dev? Into any of his body (tehehe) of work? Has your peers shown any kind of interest in Devin's music? Heck, even mild interest in a single song from your grandma?

I've shown a couple of my buddies some of his work.

The first guy I showed it to has took a considerable amount of interest in his stuff since I introduced him, to the point where I think I may be converting him to fandom. I think the first song I showed him was 'Juular' and he instantly liked it (for some background, he likes mostly extreme stuff and some "core"-ish things). Later I found him playing that song in his car pretty often, and by late last year, he had all of Deconstruction. He also had some Strapping loaded onto his MP3 as well. Coincidentally, just when I was starting this topic, I got a text from him saying that he listened to Terria and liked it.

Another buddy of mine, who likes shitty hard rock acts (Ex: Five Finger Death Punch, Theory of a Deadman, Three Days Grace, etc.), said his stuff sounded good from what I showed him. I also gave him a bit of background on Devy, and he seemed interested. I had him listen to some stuff off of Ki and Deconstruction, as well as some Strapping (which he really liked). I'll have to develop on him further.

My Dad, who's a huge fan of Dave Matthews, Rush, Pink Floyd, and mostly indie acts & other 70s/80s rock bands, seems to enjoy his stuff despite some of his heavier material. He even went with me, in New York, to the Children of Bodom show that Dev opened for. He wasn't the biggest fan of the other opening acts but he said he liked Devin's stuff. He even said that he would consider going to another show when Dev is in his area again.

A more mild examples would be my Mom, I've made her listen to songs on my iPod during car rides in the past. Of course there is a shitload of Devy on my pod. One time I had 'Earth Day' on and she thought the lyrics were kind of funny, and I played 'Blackberry' once, she enjoyed it. And I'm not too sure but I think she secretly enjoys 'Fucker' (she pretends to be offended by it but I find her giggling whenever it's on).

So, what say you, forum people?

Suggested some albums to a few people. Most of them enjoyed what I suggested, but didn't really look much further. C'est la vie.

One guy said he'd rather listen to Wham, though. Still not following on that one.

Not lately. At one point awhile back, before Deconstruction came out, I got one of my workmates into Infinity. And a couple of others since are now aware of his existence, though I think it's more of a "not bad" thing then a "I'm getting his albums" reaction.
Still, quite a few of my friends are already Devin fans, though I spread the word when possible.

Most of my friends listen to metal, so most of my friends like Dev. He's quite popular here anyways. The ones who don't listen, I don't bother trying to win them over, I don't like having music forced on me. If they're interested and wanna know more, I'll give them his back catelogue and tell them to get going.

If someone 'tried to get me into an awesome artist' they would be on the receiving end of a very hard stare, at the very least. Musical equivalent of Jehovah's Witnesses at the door.

So many people I know have been convinced by Deadhead (including me). This includes 2 or 3 people that I have showed Mr. T's music.

But here's some real testimony:
I gave my girlfriend's brother a bunch of music for Christmas, trying to highlight every subgenre of metal. (Almost impossible; there were 30+ albums).
She came to me about a week later saying, "Yea, he wants everything by Devin." Apparently, he'd been listening to Accelerated Evolution almost nonstop (see above paragraph)

Among my friends back in Norway there is pretty much only 2 who are into some metal, and they like Dev's music. Only one of them got into him because of me though. The other one stumbled upon it years after I got into the music, because she heard her boyfriend listening to it. I don't think my friends have much faith in my taste in music, but hey... they seem perfectly happy with their Madonna, Tori Amos, electronic, indie, rock...whatever they are into.
I always have fun stories from Dev-gigs to share, so they know who Dev is, and can check out his music in their own time if they wish to.


Having said that though.... I do tend to get a bit grumpy that their music is always "allowed" to be played at parties and get-togethers, but mine isn't.

Got my bandmates (2 at that time) into SYL, and I think I guided the more recent third one beyond Ziltoid into the DT(P) solo realm. Aside from that I maybe convinced my oldest brother about the softer solo stuff, but that's about as far as it goes.

Other opinions from people I've played Dev for ranged from "ew, too loud/harsh/metal" to "sounds boring".

I live with a bunch of very angry and particular metalheads, and since it's San Francisco, Dev's not rattlehead-y enough for them.

Honestly, I never really tried, and I even stopped mentioning it altogether years ago.

Metal's too difficult to make everyone happy at a party, I'd rather no metal. While most of my buddies are very into metal, they've also got a sense of humour (had a bus full of 11 metalheads for 4 hours the other week, our listening choices were Meat Loaf, Jackson 5, Lion King soundtrack and wee bit of Desmond Dekker)

I did lol earlier, a friend of mine from uni who went out of her way to avoid listening to Dev is now going out with Phase (from the forum) and is coming to one of the Borderline gigs...

I got one of my friends into Dev, but for the most part my friends consist of two kinds of people: people who already like Dev, and those who just don't hold interest in his kind of music. Which I can respect, of course. I find it interesting though, to hear which albums/what sort of sound appeals to them most. My partner rather likes his solo stuff, but he can't stand SYL. Another of my friends loves Dev, but he had only heard the 4 DTP albums and had no idea the rest of Dev's work existed. One of my other friends whom I intro'd Dev to, is now quite the fan of all his work.
