not the whole song, but the main riff that begins it uses the same progression (methinks), and obviously the reverberated memory of the actual "A Monday" is among the many layers floating around at the end of the song.

Ki - Heaven send
Addicted - Numbered??
Deconstruction - Stand
Ghost (2) - Watch you

I thought there was a strong riff-similarity between 'Disruptr' and 'Stand', actually. But there are stacks of little references to DTP albums within the other DTP albums, if that makes sense. Particularly in Decon - he certainly references his big singing moment in 'Numbered!' on 'The Mighty Masturbator' (2.01-2.21), but I like how he doesn't overshadow that amazing moment on Addicted by singing it with a different energy; also, in 'Planet of the Apes' (9.37-9.46) he seems to reference two previous moments at once! The line is 'All the world's been waiting for the news', which sounds very similar to the chorus in 'Awake!' ('all the world's a stage and we are home again'), but it's sung to the same tune of a similar moment in 'Planet Smasher' back on ZTO when he says 'All I want to be is the universe' (2.44-2.52). Shit, I must have a fair bit of time on my hands to notice and then write about this ;)

And this is just the tip of the iceberg, of course - obviously the big orchestral/choir section at the end of 'Mighty Masturbator' references the end of 'Processional' back on the Infinity EP from '99! And the list goes on...

The As You were intro is played on an acoustic guitar though, and A Monday is played on an electric guitar. I like A Monday better... the tone is so smooth but so... ominous, in a way. Yet so relaxed. If you catch my drift

so you could say there was a change of ki? :D

I'm surprised I never picked up on that :? Sometimes I'd listen to Ki and shut it off before Demon League came on, just because it seemed like the character had all the issues solved after Ki and Quiet Riot, and then Demon League would come on and screw everything up. Now I know why that song is there.

This whole DTP series keeps me thinking about my own personal "addictions", and since the series ends in happiness and peace, I feel like I'm going in the same direction. So glad Devin took the time and effort to come up with such a crazy musical metaphor for it all. If this one guy can conquer his own fears and bad habit cycles and whatnot, then sure as hell This random guy can. Maybe that's the main reason I'm a Devin Townsend fan :) Power over self via personal enlightenment, over the medium of awesome music.

Hey man. I'm glad my thoughts on it all gave you something to think about too! It's all so open to interpretation, of course, but because 'Ghost' ends up leading back into 'Ki', I think the musical metaphor he's going for is the idea of 'cycles'. The hope that you feel in 'Ghost' is about being more enlightened next time round - that could mean in the next life, or simply the next job, relationship, drive - take your pick! But it works in the context of the albums too - once you've heard them all, you can't help but know more and hear more each time you take the journey through them because we know where it's leading and we're more open to things we may not have noticed the first time round. Again, just like in life - it's all about enlightenment :)

That bit always reminds me of the line in Numbered! ("All the world's been waiting for a photograph")

I always liked how Devin did this, like Notes From Africa/Love? and the "NOW DECONSTRUCT" line, "I'm alright to fly" on Deconstruction and Addicted. It's just...nice. Not there is any question about it when it comes to Devin's music, but it just makes you feel like they are really aware of their past works and put extra care in to it, like a little bonus for the listener as well as a link between the different music. love it.

I loved that reference in Notes From Africa to Love? There are so many references back to the past! a lot of mentions of Greyhound (busses) in songs as well if memory serves me correctly...

Just to let you know in numbered theres the line "All the worlds been waiting for for a photograph" I'd say it would be referencing that over the awake one, but thats just me.

I can picture myself in 30 years saying to myself and my kids - "listen to these albums; music this inspired and creative just doesn't exist anymore."

But the sad reality is - aside from Devin, does it even exist today?

It's around as much as it was in the past, the only reason it seems like the 70s/80s/90s etc were so great is because you've forgotten about all the shit. For instance, look back to 1969. Elvis, David Bowie, The Beatles, Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix, etc; what was the biggest hits of that year?

Rant aside...

I got the impression it was Numbered that bit was referencing rather than Addicted ("All the world's been waiting for a photograph") but there's no reason Awake isn't borrowing it from Numbered.
