She is only 13, and the potential is there for her to be really good. She really needs to work out the sloppiness now, though. Can't be sloppy like that playing what she's trying to play. Her playing is a lot like mine was when I started pursuing the weedly weedly wanky stuff. I never did buckle down and clean it up, though.

There was this one time I was trying out guitars in a store back in Santa Cruz, CA many years ago, and this scrawny blonde dude came over and was watching me. I wasn't really paying attention, thinking it was just another Santa Cruz "local," which translates to a surf bum/hippie/tweeker in his tie-dyed shirt and ripped jeans. I paused in my playing for second and he says "I have no idea how you can do what you do when your hands look like a couple of fish flopping around. Keep it it up, it sounds good." He then left the store. One of the clerks came over and said "You know who that was?" As soon as he said that, I realized I did.

You would think I would be inspired to keep at it and improve my game. Nope. In my young, cocky brain I thought "Steve Morse thinks I sound good, so I must be good."

Today I look back and I'm pretty sure he was either high, or just being nice to the poor kid that thought he could shred.

I'm sure there is a moral in that story somewhere.

I have to say I don't get what everyone is so upset with about this clip. She clearly states she did it as a way of blowing off some steam between practising the usual shred stuff and wanted to do something totally different just as a mechanical exercise. I didn't get the vibe it was meant to be taken as a piece of music. Most of those Petrucci exercises don't sound exactly good. Who knows what she sounds like playing normally?

No, that's cool. I just hate the idea of someone with technical finger skills and just playing random crap and being praised for it.
