The place to speak about Dev's current projects, and everything yet to come

I'm not convinced that these vinyls would be sourced from something other than the CD.

- If the vinyls sound better in some cases, that could be because whoever remastered the transfer simply did a really good job at it.
- The high frequencies in the spectrum could be a side effect of the remastering (e.g., some kind of harmonising effect). Alternatively, it could be harmonic distortion introduced by the turntable or recording process. Since you can't explicitly listen to those frequencies, it's impossible to tell...

long story short, if it was the CD audio, the frequency range would cut off at 22.05kHz. instead, it extends fully into the 48kHz frequency ceiling (the limit a 96kHz sample rate will keep) — you can't just magically add those frequencies to the CD audio. once they're gone (i.e. the audio is dithered to 44.1kHz for the CD pressing), they're gone. this means that the source for at least the Infinity vinyl is of higher quality than a simple CD transfer.

Infinity is the one vinyl record where I can say without hesitation it was sourced from something other than the CD. It blows away the CD recording in every shape possible.

Hmm... I haven't even had a chance to listen to the Infinity vinyl yet... that one will definitely be the next one up for review... I'm intrigued!

I'm getting around to listening to Infinity on LP. It's a snow day here so I just threw it on my secondary system. Its an OPP Project table with an OPP Project phono preamp into a mid-level Sony HT amp. The speakers are cheap shit that came with a surround bundle from Future Shop. It's their own proprietary brand.

Unless my memory of the CD is completely wrong, this one sounds fantastic. The stereo image is more pronounced and background vocals stand out, the bass guitar is audible, guitar tones are sharper and the overall guitar mix seems heavier. When I get my CD collection organized, I will have to take this down to my basement music system and a-b it with the vinyl.

Dev had said that they were being done by Century Media and not Back On Black like the others. I wonder if they had planned to do them both as boxed sets ala the Strapping Young Lad "City" set?

Has anyone listened to that SYL LP? I wonder what the quality is like?

Is there an SYL vinyl, or are you talking about City the SYL album?

Looks like it is Inside Out for CM:

I just wanted to drop you some quick news which I think is really cool... Your
whole solo catalog (all the DT stuff) is going to come out on vinyl.
InsideOut with CM are doing two titles themselves (Ocean Machine and
Terria), and Back On Black Records from the UK will do vinyl on the other 7
(Physicist, Infinity, Synchestra, Accelerated Evolution, Ziltoid, Addicted
and Ki). It will probably take another 4 months or so until they start to see the light of
day, but it all just got hooked up.

thanks for looking that up, ppinkham. so does that mean Inside Out are having it cut and made, and CM are distributing it?

My first post here, but I'm certainly not new to Dev or vinyl, yet am to Dev on vinyl  Based on what I read here, I've first ordered Infinity and Physicist and they're on the way :D

It's unfortunate to read that some may not have been done proper justice, which is a problem with a lot of newer vinyl releases. My last "new" vinyl purchase was a bit of a disappointment... Ayreon's 01011001. Great album, but the second track is quite scratchy--similar sound to vinyl itself being scratched, and I assumed that was somehow the case until I searched online. An amazon review notes the same issue on two different copies of the vinyl, suggesting that perhaps all of them are that way. Seems careless :?

I had seen when vinyl was first announced for Devin's collection, and expected my first purchase would be Ocean Machine. Hopefully that plan hasn't been completely washed, as that would be a great one to have on vinyl (and despite my preference for black vinyl when it comes to sound quality [transparent and colored vinyl doesn't seem to age as well In my experience], a trans-blue Ocean Machine would be nice 8) )

Wow, almost three months and no posts... I guess this means we should give up on ever seeing Ocean Machine and Terria on vinyl?
