Sold!
I've been wearing my DTP beanie for quite a while now, but a Ziltoid hat would be amazing. After Tuska, I was searching eBay, Amazon and hevydevy merch for that hat for weeks..

although it was suggested with good intentions, i think a "best of" is a pretty shitty idea. i mean, what hits exactly did he have? and who would buy it? usually casual fans who like 3 or 4 singles would buy a best of for a band like VH but if relatively nobody's heard of em... some dedicated fans may buy it but without something extra not found anywhere else it would be hard to justify the money especially when it's clearly just a ploy to make money, if even for the manager and not the artist.

Many artists put out compilation albums when they have never had a hit, and of course it's about money. Money, and exposure. I never understood why some people seem to be against artists making money. Artists have bills to pay, too.

Compilations are never for the current fans, it is for getting people a taste of older material in a more accessible way. I know that when I hear something from an artist that is new to me, I will see if they have some sort of compilation. Especially if they have been around for 20 years.

For someone just getting turned on to Dev, looking at his back catalog can be extremely confusing. "I liked 'Addicted,' but that is the Devin Townsend Project. WTF is the Devin Townsend Band? Punky Bruster? What the hell is this Biotech/Ocean Machine thing? Is that something I would like? Wow, I read Devin didn't like 'Physicist.' Maybe I shouldn't bother with that?" If Devin put together what over the years he has learned to be "fan favourites" on one or two discs, it would be a confirmation from Dev saying "Yeah, all this shit is me," and would allow the casual fan to kind of "catch up."

Say someone goes to one of these festival show, sees and hears Devin for the first time. "Wow, that was awesome! I gotta check out his stuff!" He does a search when he gets home, and finds out the song he really like was called 'Kingdom' from Physicist. Hey, cool! But he doesn't recognize anything else from that disc, because Devin didn't play anything else from Physicist. Oh wait, this other disc, this compilation, has 'Kingdom' on it, as well. "Hey! I recognize this other song, too! I remember him playing that! And that one, too! I should probably get this over Physicist, since I at least recognize more than one song."

I'd love to hear some of the random stuff Dev has on his Youtube or something.
Shame.

Yeeeah... but what are the chances something like this would happen, ppinkham? quite remote. Plus, there's too much material to make a best of that would really reflect Devin's work, which is so huge and so great. What would you put in a best of. You'd have to leave out a ton of beautiful stuff and personnally it would hurt my ass to do it.

On the other hand you may be right. In the latest tours there have to be some poeple who didn't know him and discovered him during a gig.

For my part discovered Devin like 8 months ago listening at Universe in a Ball on the radio. I didn't know shit about him. I downloaded ALL of his stuff and fell instantly for it. Then I started to buy.

All in all I think it's up to Dev and his new manager and I think they would make the best decision. If they ever release a best of with (hopefully) a few extras I would definetly buy it, be it only to support the man.

Mrbean, I found a ton of random stuff I would never have imagined on Youtube. For instance "Happy camper" live or the "Ziltoid transmissions". Or interviews or accoustic shows or just random shit like 'devin townsend's boogie woogie'. Have you ever seen THAT? i'ts fucking hilarious, my stomach hurt from laughing.

I think a compilation is a great idea. Forget the notion that "it's a ploy to make money", you cynical sausage, you.

After all, I'm sure a lot of people here would make a mix CD for one of their mates to get them into Devin's stuff. It's the same thing, surely. Though the question which I'm sure would cause the members of this forum (hah, member) to tear eachother apart.. is over WHAT precisely to include.

Nevertheless, half the fun of becoming a fan is diving in and listening to it all in your own time.

also when he opened for btbam he had free sample CDS of a song from most albums. point is, not that i'm against it for a way to make money, but i just don't think anyone could profit from it. if someone hears a song on the radio or sees him at a festival and likes it, the first thing they're going to do is check out the myspace page or youtube for free, not buy a "best of." that's all i'm sayin.

Sorry, I noticed that the video was already posted in the other thread. XD

And to the person who said that his daughter and parents like Devin Townsend, that's especially cool and I have a "cool story bro" to mention. In that 100 songs thread, I mentioned in the Addicted (song) portion of it that my teacher ok'd the use of that song to be playing while people walked into the theater for a performance. About an hour or two before the show, she would often have her grandson there. He's maybe 4 or something, and fairly shy. I was doing sound check and whatnot, and I put on Addicted just for the hell of it. Holy shit, you should have seen this kid's face light up! He ran to the middle of the room and for the entire damn song, he was jumping and thrashing and grooving to "Addicted". He was thrilled.

Anyway, sorry for hijacking 'Quick Update' there. :) Back to business.

There's hardly any connection with the subject. But I see your point, mate :P !
