I was that way about Janes Addiction. And in hindsight, yeah it was pretty consuming.

When I heard Porno For Pyros, I really didn't like it. I bought it and tried, but it didn't resonate at all.

Then, the things I didn't like about pfp I ended up recognizing elements of in JA, then I began to dislike that as well.


My only criteria as a musician is to make whatever I do the best it can be. I lays 'em out so you can plays 'em out.

I follow it where it leads, and sometimes it leads me to places I like more than others myself.

There's nothing like finding music that truly moves you, it fills you with an indescribable energy when everything
just clicks. I know what the OP is talking about, this is how I feel about Devin's work. All of it? Well, no. But a whole heck
of a lot of it. Sometimes it goes away, other times, it doesn't. All you can do is live and love what you feel a connection to.

So, I second/third/fourth/whatever the sentiment of thanks to Devin for just being an amazing guy who I can connect with artistically.

I love Load. The House Jack Built is one of Hetfield's greatest moment as a singer. That album in general was all about the lyric. It wasn't a crazxy riff-fest, but to me it sounds like a very deep and personal record.

See, I still liked Metallica with 'Load.' It just wasn't Metallica to me anymore. Different band, same name. I learned I could enjoy music more if I didn't put expectations on it or compare it to what came before. I can thank the David Lee Roth vs Sammy Hagar in VH wars for that.

That being said, 'St. Anger' is a pile of shit. So much potential and brilliance in there, but buried in pure suckitude.

I agree with this. St. anger was a total turd of an album, it's unbelievable that the singles got so much air time on radio when nobody, and i mean absolutely NOBODY liked that album.

That's not true. I have a friend who really, really loves that album. He even likes the way the drums sound.

Usually he has pretty good taste, so I'm still friends with him but it was touch and go there for a while.

The best thing I can say about that album is that it made for an interesting documentary.

Dev's post got me thinking about Pearl Jam - I really dug those guys at the time of Vs and all that in the early 90s. But from the mid 90s to this day I cannot listen to a single bar of their music without wanting to shred my scalp with a rusty cheese grater. Or perhaps wash my balls with house bricks. Taste changes, but appreciation of music is a deeply felt emotional reaction, so I guess we should all ride those waves for all they're worth when they come along!

I can totally appreciate that Hetfield's voice has got better and better over the years, but to me, the actual content of their post-Black album output just seems contrived, and written specifically to make money rather than for the love of music.

I can appreciate some Load/Reload stuff now that I'm a bit older, but it's just not the same.

I don't mind an artist changing their sound, even if that means going in a lighter direction, but it has to be natural. I'm sure many will disagree with me on this, but personally I don't feel the change to Load fits that description.

I used to be a total Rush fanboy (woooo Canada!!), and I would rave about everything they did. I think that was because they were the first worthwhile band i got into, so i couldn't quite imagine there would be more to come... What ended that kind of obsession i had with them (all Rush all the time, im serious) was the broadening of my horizons, and finding music that perhaps resonated with me on a deeper level ... Nevertheless, I do still love them, and i am still affected by the songs that used to get to me in what ever way.

Hmmm.... Even back then i didn't adore everything they had done. Nine inch nails comes close, but i can't really get into The Slip, Tool, similar, 10,000 days again i didn't totally agree with (but it has some really good moments. The only band where i like 99% of the stuff is Assemblage 23, i think there's only one song i'm not partial to, but on the flip side i am not as gripped emotionally by the music as with other bands. On that note, i agree with whoever said before about not understanding total obsession/ fanboyism or whatever, because nor do i. I'm not critical, really, but i do listen to my ears and sometimes they just tell me ''meh''.

I think, and maybe hope also, that just like with friends i never want to completely lose my appreciation for bands i like now. OH and, I had the working man CD (rush cover album), before i had discovered Dev stuff. I was pretty darn happy when i re-discovered the CD and listened to natural science again (covered by Devin).
