Vinyl seems to be a niche thing...I myself have never bought vinyl (recently) it doesn't really appeal to me...

Hope it gets done well though!

Up to Black everything originally came out on vinyl.

You misunderstand me. I'm not comparing the CD to the original vinyl. I'm comparing the CD to the reissue vinyl. They were all done by MFSL a couple years ago in regular and deluxe 180 grap 2xLP 45rpm packaging. Problem is, they sounded like ass, compared to the CDs AND the original vinyl pressings. I own the original vinyls, the CDs, and the MFSL reissue vinyls so I feel qualified to make that statement (a sentiment many others have agreed with).

Once again, I'm not saying all vinyl rules or all vinyl sounds terrible compared to CDs. I'm just saying it all depends on who masters it and the condition of the original master tapes. As I said, the Bernie Grundman reissue vinyl of The Black Album that was released last year is the best sounding album of my entire collection, regardless of format (CD or LP).

I hope Dev does some custom artwork.

I'm trying to imagine how The Death of Music would sound. EPIC probably.

Finally! I've been waiting for this news for years. When my wife told me about this today I was literally jumping for joy!

I plan to buy two copies of every album (one to listen to, the other to keep pristine and safe) except for Ki which I'll buy 3 copies so I can take one to work to demo our record players.

In regards to Back On Black's quality, I listened to Death's The Sound of Perseverance from Back On Black and it sounded amazing, besting the CD.

MFSL? As in Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab? You must be mistaken as I'm certain that MFSL never released any 'Tallica on vinyl. Maybe your confusing it with their release of Megadeth's Countdown to Extinction on vinyl which incidentally I own and is the best sounding album I've ever heard.

MFSL did issue the Metallica back catalogue on gold CD. I don't recall ever seeing vinyl. The recent half speed masters had nothing to do with MFSL and I concur, they suck.

here's some nitpicking:

really excited to hear this, but i also echo the quality concerns brought up so far, and would like to add that the continuous nature of Devin's albums (i.e. all the songs flow into one another) will not be replicated well on vinyl if Dev doesn't hand over a master that separates the tracklist into 20-minute chunks. the reason i say so is because there are all kinds of examples of vinyl versions of albums originally produced or devised for CD that just fade out the transitions, and it sounds really bad if you're the kind of listener who cares about this sort of thing.

let's take Ocean Machine for the example. here's how it would probably be broken up per-side for a vinyl release:
A1 Seventh Wave
A2 Life
A3 Night
A4 Hide Nowhere
A5 Sister

B1 3AM
B2 Voices in the Fan
B3 Greetings
B4 Regulator

C1 Funeral
C2 Bastard

D1 The Death of Music
D2 Things Beyond Things

look at the songs that end one side and begin the next: Sister flows directly into 3AM, Bastard flows directly into The Death of Music. if the vinyl production company simply took a CD of the final mix and mastered it for vinyl, those transitions would remain; so the resulting vinyl pressings would either simply cut off the songs (so they end abruptly or begin abruptly with the tail end of the previous song still at the start) or fade them out/in (a copout if the artist or label can get you the songs will their full endings and beginnings). this doesn't apply to Regulator/Funeral, obviously, since in between them is about the only direct breather you get on the record.

actual examples of the shittiness i just mentioned: Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral vinyl (both the original promo and the recent reissue) fade out the transitions across sides, and the recent vinyl reissue of Radiohead's Hail to the Thief fades out the end of I Will but has A Punchup at a Wedding begin with the tail end of I Will still at the start, which means they mastered the record for vinyl from a CD of the final mix, rather than directly reissuing the original HTTT vinyl master, which fully separates I Will and Punchup.

so this is why i'm saying it's gotta come direct from Dev, cuz he's the dude with the multitracks who can do such a thing.

Perfect example of what you're talking about is the BTBAM Colors vinyl. That whole album flows from one song to the next transitionally, and separating it over 2 vinyls just made it sound odd as a listen.

REGARDLESS of the nitpicking, these will surely be great collector's items or beautiful in a frame on the wall. I just hope they sound good to boot.

i never understood the fascination w/ vinyl. i don't currently own a record player and probly won't buy this but congrats that it's coming out as another way for you to make money and for people who are interested in getting it.

Once they figured out they were sucking, they must've switched to Bernie Grundman for the pressing of The Black Album and the results show.

I'm not doubting you... I was so pissed at the sound of Ride the Lightning, I've never even examined the packaging. Is there something other than an ebay auction that ties these shitty records to MFSL? I can't find any mention on thier site, in fact, looking at the past OOP lists, I can't even see the Gold CD's that I know I sold when I worked at a record store.

Huh... weird. I agree that the new half-speed masters suck, especially compared to the 180g box-set that includes the first four albums, the Garagedays EP and the Creeping Death EP.

The best sounding Metallica album on vinyl that I own is the Simply Vinyl pressing of the Black album.
