I'm curious to see if they are dynamic or if they fall into the current trend of super compressed and too loud. With all of those layers I think it would be nearly impossible to not have over-compression and really loud levels. I can't believe Supercrush wasn't clipping in that video!

1. What's the point of complaining about the loudness war if you need to import the track into an audio program to tell if it's been over-compressed or not?

2. Even with that many tracks, it's pretty easy to keep volume levels under control.

I wasn't really complaining about it, I was just curious to see whether it followed current production trends or not.

i found the video so inspirational when helping to mix a song i was working on at the time. it seems that all those subtle effects and layers make such a difference when you add it all together. it totally blew me away
if only i could mix half as good as you, Dev

This happens to me daily.

Devin - thanks for the vid! Pure-AWESOMENESS!!!

Just curious if you have any specific EQ ranges you automatically find yourself putting instruments into when dealing with that many tracks of audio? For instance - are you always high-pass filtering guitars around 125k or adding more low end to the kick/bass, etc... I guess what I'm asking is is there a general template you follow for EQ or do you do everything strictly on a track by track basis?

Thanks for indulging our audio geekiness!

Thank you so much for uploading that vid, Devin! I've always found Dev's layering to be one of the most compelling things about his music (in addition to harmony, rhythms, lyrics etc... :) ), but I also found the video very informative in practical sense. I'm a complete newbie when it comes to recording, but such simple things as him saying that he imported wave files from other projects got me thinking about what _I_ could do. Soon after I watched it, I made a little song (*cough* the result of which can be found in another thread *hrm, cough*), so thanks again! :D

Fuck that's loud.
I'm not a fan of loudness in mastering at all, but Supercrush does it well.
