Talk about whatever you want to here, but stay correct

09 - Bashing bands, labels and magazines is funny perhaps, but this is hardly the board to do so. I even doubt there is one at all. So please refrain from starting topics about how you hate a band and put your energy in saying something positive. I personally have plenty of reasons to dislike some bands, but I will not ventilate this here.

Since this rule exists:
Can we just TRY to cut down on the recent surge of "this band sucks, that band blows" chatter? If you still feel the need to express your utter contempt for other peoples' music, there's always private messaging.

Thank you. 8)

Or at least like, say why you dislike something instead of just attacking a band. For instance, me on Coldplay:
One thing is that a lot of the songs are really long, or feel long when they aren't, which wouldn't be bad if the chorus didn't repeat so often, part is the singing voice itself annoying me, part of feeling absolutely no intensity in their songs, part repetativeness (aside from the frequent chorus thing), and that may actually sound like enough to explain more hate than I actually have so I'm good.
Oh and they sound pretty generic to me but idk.

Also, does it make any sense that my favourite band is Pink Floyd and my second favourite is SYL?

I won't deny there is a few Coldplay songs that I loved. But they've dived off the board into genericness for me personally.

I'm sorry but, I loved the song Clocks. And Yellow... :D

Nah I wouldn't say so. I listen to SYL to japanese rock hip hop. So I'm sure it's not that strange. :P

have to agree with this. as lame as it sounds, the moment they got to roadrunner, they went downhill.

Disagree. Ghost Reveries was bad, and recorded before Roadrunner. Roundhouse Tapes is awesome. Watershed, meh.

Wrong again.

Ghost Reveries had its songs. Watershed is good minus Porcelain Heart...which is also the song that Fredrik co-wrote with Mikael...proving he was a bad addition to the band.

I've heard so many people bash Ghost Reveries...yet most of them only gave it one listen and threw it aside. Beneath the Mire is one of my favorite Opeth songs. Granted it doesnt stand up to My Arms, Your Hearse...or Blackwater Park(as a whole) But Ghost Reveries is definitely not a bad album, it is Opeth through and through.

He just wrote that one riff at the beginning, I'm pretty sure Mikael wrote the rest. Besides, the song is just a huge lapse of judgment on the band's part as a whole, at some point someone could have said "Hey Mikael, this goes on for twice as long as it should, can we cut it in half?" but apparently no one did.

I actually really like Watershed, I love Opeth's new heavy style in Heir Apparent (awesome solo by Fredrick Howeverthefuckyouspellhisname, by the way) and The Lotus Eater is just awesome. I really dig the new direction Opeth is going in, much better than the rehash that was Ghost Reveries.

So, I'm a bit late to the fire, but I agree with Nathan ( ) to a point: Dream Theater's early albums are way better, in my opinion, than their "new" ones. Technical playing aside, the stuff they did in the '80s and '90s actually had something behind it, but it seems to me the new stuff is all half-assed and formulaic. The only things I still listen to from DT from time to time came out before '96 (with the exception of Metropolis, Pt. 2) because I still enjoy them. The rest just don't entertain me.

As far as douchebags in the band--I think Portnoy takes the cake, and LaBrie gets second. Portnoy is a good drummer, but a control freak and not half as creative, deep, or "prog." as he seems to think he is. Honestly, when I think of the band, I imagine all of them continuously thinking about how awesome they are at their respective instruments (except Myung, who just sits quietly).

And for the Opeth debate: bands head in new directions. If Opeth had put out 12 Still Lifes, I would be bored to death with them. I'm definitely not thrilled about the lineup change, but I thought Watershed was decent (minus the drums), and I like GR quite a bit, so I think that all this "meh, they sold out because they got a new label" is rather ill-founded. Most of the things I don't like about Opeth have been there since the beginning, like the drudging repetition of a mediocre riff (introduction to "The Moor," which is a great song, and "The Grand Conjuration," for examples of beating a riff-horse to death).

No bashing intended--I like Opeth and (old) Dream Theater, but I'm not going to say they are, will be, or ever were perfect.

So why do so many people not like Ghost Reveries?

It seems that a lot of people don't like Damnation because it's too 'soft' or something - but I think Damnation wins. Is it kind of the same thing with Ghost reveries? See, I don't have the CD, but have been meaning to get it. Kinda want to know what people don't like about it before I do buy it, ya know?

Anyways, I guess I'm the odd girl out, I really really liked Watershed. And I liked the contrasts between vocals styles and song styles. Pretty versatile CD if you ask me ... considering what kind of band Opeth is.

Again, I haven't heard all of Dream Theater's material.. I have a fair number of their CDs... but I personally think they're just a mixed band: the good stuff is really cool, and the lesser material is a little wanky and not as good. I don't think they're crap for life because they're a bit inconsistent. Surely they should be alowed some wiggle room? :)

I think Dream Theater and Opeth should make music like they want, regardless of what "fans" say. When it comes to Opeth, there's the fanbase that worship the early more darker albums and who say everything they've made after MAYH is total poo. Whatever. The reason most people (including myself) don't like Ghost Reveries that much is because the production is quite crap compared to the others, too heavy on the synth and all that. I did give GR a full listen a few days ago and I still think the songs are awesome. Watershed went sky high above my expectations and I think maybe it even tops Blackwater Park on mah favourites list. And so on.

Watershed has some great things for Opeth. Their heavy use of 70's prog influence really shows on it and I absolutely love how they incorporate it(see The Lotus Eater and Burden's organ solo)

Ghost Reveries has a couple of songs it doesnt need either (Atonement, Isolation Years, The Grand Conjuration...even though it was awesome to jam to live...)

I'm an Opeth fanboy through and through...but that being said I still think that their new line up is not as strong as it once was. Axenrot outdid my expectations on Watershed, but he still doesn't have the same feel that Lopez had...no one will.

And I absolutely agree with Abydost, Opeth should write the music they want.

Final thoughts - Happy birthday Skrimpy!
