I was fooled as well...I couldn't tell that it wasn't Vai playing. It didn't seem that much different than what he normally plays...you know, songs that don't really go anywhere and feature what seems like hours of wanking...

But Vai is allright. I think most people who say that he only wanks around are just jealous...

'For the love of god' might be a good example for his guitar skills beyond wanking off. His bends are quite awesome. His sound is good. Of course he shows off a bit but its all played with enough passion to still benefit the song. But other people just have these prejudices against instrumental music.

It was a very well put together dub actually =P. I was almost fooled, and then I remembered I'd seen the original video....which isn't much better to be honest, apart from the notes are slightly more specific.

Vai is only good for listening to if you want to hear irritating, bleepy noises.

I understand he knows his way around a guitar, and it takes a lot of skill to flawlessly make all of those sounds he can produce. When I first heard some of Vai's stuff, I would really get into it. "For the Love of God" is a great instrumental, and you can definitely get the sensation of what he was feeling during that song (didn't he fast for a week?). There are some other really good songs on that album Passion & Warfare, as well. On the other hand, while I respect him, I really am not a big fan of a lot of his melodies and song structures. The excessive wanking just kinda adds to the displeasure. Over the past few years, I've begun to lose excitement and interest in his playing. He is an artist and a musician, and he has the right to express himself any way he believes he should. But that doesn't mean I have to like it.

Jealous? No. Becoming less and less impressed? Yes.
