I've never heard anything positive about Epihphone actually. Only the 7-strings they used to sell between 2000 and 2002 are pretty nice, but most of all because they are rare and have an original sound.
I own a Epiphone Dot and it's really awful. I've played on Epiphone Flying V's, Les Pauls and SG's and they all sounded like shit.
If you want a Les Paul, buy either a Gibson classic or custom shop Les Paul; they're the only way to go if you want a nice solid, BIG tone.

Or... if you still want to buy Epiphone, replace the pickups with some original Gibson pickups. That will already give you a better tone. (Doesn't fix the crappy finishing job though)

I've got an Epiphone SG (G-400, specifically) and it sounds pretty good. It's not really anything particularly amazing, but it's a hell of a lot more versatile than most guitars in the price range... but then again, my guitar has Gibson-made pickups in it. There's nothing wrong with the finish, either, aside from some minor (very, very minor) wear on the fretboard (the rosewood itself getting a bit fainter, not the frets) - I've had it for nearly 2 years.

Really, with both Gibson and Epiphone, their guitars are very much "Diamonds in the Rough" type of deals... the quality control is crap. With Epiphone, don't buy anything not made in Korea - with Gibson, try every guitar you see before buying one. I've played a bunch of Epis, and some were terrible, and some were very good. The '59 Korina V reissue is actually pretty good, and has an insane amount of low end for passive pickups. I've played Gibsons that sounded and felt far worse than both my SG and the Epi Vs that I've played; but I've also played Gibsons that sounded and felt better, as well.

General rule of thumb; Anything Gibson runs now has terrible quality control, so try before you buy. :)

I have an Epiphone Les Paul (the one with the three pickup setup), and I think its quite good. Granted, I did replace all the pickups (Dimarzio Air Norton in the neck, Fred in the middle, and a Breed in the bridge) as well as all of the pots, but still >_>

Washburn. Great sound for both electric and acoustic. I myself have an N4 signature model, which has a great sound to it.

Just have to rob a bank first..

Hmm, are you sure? My personal experience with these guitars is not good. They have no body whatsoever, the sustain is nill, and really sound pretty dead. I've tried them over multiple amps (Marshall, Fender, Bogner, Peavey, even Matchless!), and whatever I tried, I could not get a nice tone going...
The Suhr pickup is pretty popular at the moment, but I would not recommend this pickup...
Still, it's your personal choice, just a friendly warning :P

For the money I would go for a Tom Anderson, Musicman, Fender relic, Gibson custom shop, something like that... These guitars also keep their value, a lot more than Suhr.

Exactly... The Bogner Ecstacy for your gain, and the Matchless HC-30 for your clean sound. After that, you're settled for life with probably the best guitar-sound you'll ever get.
