Hey guys,

I'm kinda new to these forums, (browsed them alot, but never posted) but I have this question I'd like to ask you.

I would like to start playing guitar. I heard it's better if you start with an accoustic one rather then electric. Now is this true? Because I'd really love to start with electric, but if it's better to start with accoustic, I'm not sure what to do.

I'd like to know your opinions about this mather .

Well, I started with an acoustic and it was easier to switch to the electric afterwards. But it depends on what music you want to make. If you want to make rock and Metal only, you should start with electric, if you want to make all kinds of music, you should start with acoustic.
My oppinion.

You can be weird like me, and play bass for 3 years and then switch. I don't recomend it, but it's a cool feeling! You feel like you totally DOMINATE the guitar.

I say that unless you have a strong preference to which one you think you'd prefer, it's not going to matter too much. Just go with whatever you are msot comfortable with.

Play what you wanna play man... As for your original question, I started on an electric/acoustic mandolin, moved to acoustic guitar, then electric. It was kind of an awkward change, and as a result of the move up in fret size I've been told I have some odd ways of playing gutiar-- Eg. I powerchord with my index and pinkie (instead of middle or ring finger), I'll usually use 2 fingers for tapping/sliding etc and just slide more often, etc.

If you want to end up playing electric guitar, I'd say start on an electric.

haha...for me it was exactly the other way around. I took guitar lessons for two or three years, now I'm playing the bass in my band. BTW: I would recommand this way. You have no problems switching to bass, when you played the guitar for a while.

It's actually phisically easier to play an electric cause the strings are generally more slack/smaller guage on electrics. But when playing with distortion you'll need to learn some muting technique or you'll end up sounding like shit.

If you want to play electric, start with electric, because acoustic will just lead you down the path of strumming and finger picking, and you don't need that shit when playing metal.

Keep in mind that electric costs more, you'll need an amp, maybe some pedals. Buy quality stuff too. I regret buying all those shitty practice amps before I finally settled on a quality amp head and cab.
