Dev had a similar one when I saw him on stage recently but it was darker and not as flat. (Like a slope from the edges so that the strings and shit were raised a bit).

Well to be fair, they don't crunch. If you listen to their newer stuff there's relatively rare use of chords or powerchords of any kind, it's mostly single string playing to keep it somewhat comprehensible... Of course, they're one of the few bands that use that style of playing well, but still. It's more of a sharp twang really.

I'm not a huge Meshuggah fan, but i heard "Catch 33" recently and I don't like that tone at all. I do kinda dig the tone on some of their earlier works like "Destroy Erase Improve" back when they didn't quite tune to Z yet. hehehe.

The best downtuned tone i've ever heard is Fear Factory "demanufacture" and Crowbar "sonic excess in it's purest form". Both have a really tight punchy, crushing tone. They were in B tuning, i think? Any lower than A and it loses something.... it just doesn't sound like the sonic space a guitar should inhabit. That's bass guitar frequencies.

well, yeah, i wasn't even arguing about the overall tone, i actually kinda prefer their older stuff in some parts too.
but still, it doesn't sound muddy to me enough to say it's a muddy tone

That was his custom made ESP, that's "only" 7 string though and very similar to the LTD SC607B

Yeah, and since recording techniques and amps have been getting better I don't see it as as much of problem anymore either.
Also, turn the gain down

Alien sounds alright. You gotta sacrifice alot of crunch in your tone to get any clarity in such low tunings though... The guitar tone on City sounds WAY better and heavier than Alien, and City was in C right?

Also amps... amps have actually not getten much better in the last ten years or so. Alien was recorded with Mesa Dual recto's right? That amp was originally released in '92, that's a 14 year old circuit design, and it's still one of the most popular amps out there to this day. Peavey 5150 is another early 90's amp.

Also the Marshall JCM-800's. Those are hugely popular amps to this day, and that circuit was designed in the late 70's. The only thing modern amps have on old amps is Gain. Most modern amps have tons of gain. Gain dosn't always equal good tone, A good boost pedal on a JCM-800 will get you all the gain nessesary, and it'll kill most any modern amp, ecpecially in a live situation.

I personally like the sound of really low guitar. It has a real growl and crunch you can't get on a 6-string in standard tuning. Low F# on that 8-string is insane! I wonder if there is any audio of that monster being played...

Agree on the sacrifice, but still, if all (string gauge and tension, neck action, guitarwood, amp settings) is perfectly balanced, I'm for it. Less buzz, more growl. RRRROOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWRRRRRRRR!
