Ah I've seen this pic on sevenstring.org! Cool stuff. Ibanez doesn't make anything for left handed people exceot a 6 string RG model.. maybe some other low end model. I'm waiting on a fully paid 8 string from Halo. Its coming with emg 808s bridge/neck, 24 fret ebony 28', Trans black quilt maple top on mahogany body/ set mahogany neck. hope is sounds good. What do you tune to?

Hey there, fellow SS.org'er! :D Its a shame that Ibanez (and, well, just about every other guitar company) neglects leftys as much as they do.

Right now it's in standard F# B E A D G B E, though I may make an attempt at going down a whole step and see how that goes. I'll try a biggie Ernie Ball on the low E here when I'm not too busy with everything else in life. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy where I am, and like to keep my main guitar in a standard state of tune.

I played the ibanez 8 the other day in the shop.
It played very nice, I was able to adjust quickly (being used to 7s already) and even fast stuff, sweeping etc. was easy to pull off. the guitar blatantly needed either a longer scale or thicker string gauge and as thicker strings usually fuck up the sound, I would say the guitar realistically needs at least another inch on the neck.

I was pleasantly surprised though, by the pickups too. I HATE the EMG 80-7s, haven't heard the 707s but if they sound anything like the 808s in that ibanez they are ok in my book

I LOVE the action, the best of any axe I've owned, that surprised the shit out of me! You'd figure the extra neck width would have some detriment to the playability, but no. The profile is just perfect, IMHO.

Except for the low F#, the string tension from the factory was perfect, and personally I like the sound and feel of light strings better (a lesson learned from Ty Tabor). Heavy wound strings sound "honky", especially with uber-tight sounding amps. The .065 on the bottom IS a wee bit floppy, I've got an E.B. .070 laying around... I'm going to drop it on there one of these days and see how that goes. As for the scale length, while I'd like to try a 28 5/8" (Stienberger Synapse, me thinks) one of these days, the 27.0" is a good compromise... any longer and I think the feel of the high strings would start to suffer. I've already got a guitar with a 34" scale... it's also known as a bass, and seems to work fine with the lower notes.

As for the EMG's: Well, I like them to begin with (Devy and In Flames have some of the best tones IMO, and they both use EMG's, and 5150's) but yeah, I've heard a lot of passive purists give the 808 the thumbs up. The pups are a big part of what makes the concept work, as it balances the low F# and B strings so they don't overpower the other strings. They provide a good amount of output, while not being noisy... defined chunky rhythms, balanced glassy leads, and AWESOME cleans. Those used to a scooped sound, or a 'bumped' midrangey pup won't like the flatness of the frequency response, but that's what the knobs on the amp is for. :coffee: I only wish it had a coil tap...

yeah, CHUNKY is definately how i would describe the 808s sound :)

I played it through a powerball, because that's what I have at home. With the gain around 5 or 6 on channel 3 it sounded really good.
I still prefer the duncan invader or JB model though :)

Dev said that he was going to get ESP to make him an 8 string, but when SYL played Download in 2006 he bought a Blackmachine 8 string.
Don't know if this meant he wasn't going to get an ESP one though.

again, that pickup configuration is not for me, and a standard scale 8? wtf?
I wonder if it has a high A instead of another low string

I just wish it had a neck pickup :(

Chuck never had or used one, so why would they put one on a special edition guitar dedicated to him...?

They shouldn't, I want one with one because I use the neck pickup.
I never stated they should change the chuck edition or implied that his guitar ever had a neck pickup! :)
