To me, downloading is a way to hear new artists that you wouldn't have heard normally, or to get rare songs/remixes from CDs that aren't in print any more. It's not a replacement for buying the CD.
If I like something I download, then I will always buy the CD, because I'm a music nerd and I like having CDs in my collection. A CD-R full of mp3s is just not the same as the real CD. When I hear an mp3 I like I just have to get the CD as soon as possible.
I think it was downloading one or two Physicist tracks that really motivated me to get off my arse and start buying Dev's solo stuff back in the day. I'm pretty sure Physicist was out at that point though. I feel uneasy about downloading stuff that's not out yet if I really respect the artist, unless it's really different from the final product.
That said, I don't download stuff any more, because it's a lot harder to do it nowadays, unless you're looking for really mainstream stuff.
