hey! been introduced to john petrucci guitar playing,liked what i was hearing,but dont no much about his band dream theater, can anyone recommend an album to start listening to first? they have a few!

The first I saw/heard of them was on the Live at budikan (yes I know I can't spell it) and it pretty much blew me away, my year 12 music teacher showed it to me, twas an interesting lesson.

Start with Metropolis pt. 2: Scenes from a memory, Six degrees of inner turbulence or Awake, DON'T touch Falling into infinity.
Personally I would also recommend Liquid Tension Experiment 1 & 2, it's John with Mike Portnoy and Jordan Rudess of DT and Tony Levin of Peter Gabriel/etc. It's instruMENTAL, that shit is crazy and there are some killer songs, like Kindred Spirits (LTE1), Biaxident and Another Dimension (LTE2). All in all, there's a lot to enjoy, so have fun.

I like the oldest stuff most. He has amazing chops but nowadays his solos sound like picking exercises more than music

I don`t really listen to DT anymore, but "Images And Words" is a pretty good album.

Images and Words, Awake, A Change Of Seasons, Scenes From A Memory and Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence are their best albums.

But almost every Dream Theater song is worth hearing.

I think Dream Theater divide us more than any other topic! Some people love them, some people hate them, some people love them but used to hate them, some people hate them but used to love them, and so on...

I think most of their albums have something to offer. Images & Words is a bit 80s at times, but you should really check it out. Scenes From a Memory is one of their most consistent albums and was the first one I heard. I also like Falling Into Infinity a lot, although some people don't like it. I never really figured out why because there are some great wee tunes there. The only albums I never really got into were Awake and Train Of Thought.

Liquid Tension Experiement II is pretty good, but I've not heard the first one (which I think had Mike Keneally on keys rather than JR). Has anyone heard John Petrucci's solo album yet? I think its only available online.

Just on a side note, did you know that your finnish compatriot also seems to be a real fan of the Dev? In an interview for the release of Wintersun Jari was asked for inspirations, and he called himself a "Devin Townsend - freak" and said that some parts of the album remind of Dev's music.

One of the biggest dev fans from Finland, I said him he made the best shred album in years and I would join the band if he moved to London but they found an 18 year old who is almost better than Jari... good for them. He is not just a Dev fan, also Halford. But his singing is not that far yet, but on shredding he whips some ass. Still, both singing and shredding and songwriting, he's got fuckloads talent!
