... i tried going to sleep listening to devlab... didn't work... lying in the dark listening to freaky soundscapes? not good for a peaceful night's sleep :P...

anyway, i still havn't completed the CD yet but i'll say this... if britlab was made i'm not sure i could take it seriously... with all the noises devin has managed to create a freaky/disturbing atmosphere that other people might not have been able to create... it's because devin has one of the most genius/abstract minds in music today that i know that there is some reasoning behind the noises that we hear when listening to devlab - i'm pretty sure it's not all random, and that's what makes it great... unless dev is just having us all on, laughing at us while we try to deconstruct random noises :)...

i still feel uneasy listening too devlab - especially track 4 atm... freaky, haha...

well, i was wrong haha :)...

I recieved my copy yesterday (thanks Tracy!) and... well... I don't feel qualified to comment on it, it's too different from what I usually listen to.

Thats the nicest way I have heard somebody describe it when they dont like it!

And as for falling asleep to it...well, you would think it would be really good for that...but actually its quite disturbing. There is so much happening even though there is no music. Try walking in the dark with it aswell. Thats bad too.

Does anyone see the resemblence to some of Dev's other ambient pieces? Like for example the end of the song 'humble' from Terria. Its obviously something that he has been playing around with for some time. Infact, I think on the Physicist multimedia bit he says something about 'never getting credit for the ambient bits' - or something to that effect.

Yeah he does. Maybe that's why he released Devlab. Just to kinda say "Hey look!! I can do samplers and keyboards too, y'know!"

I think it's pretty good cos I like this sort of thing, but it's hard to find an appropriate time to lsiten to it. The missus certainly doesn't approve!! :D

Though my statement could certainly interpreted that way, it's not quite what I meant to say.
In fact, I like those pieces that actually have a beat, the layered deep synth thingie, and the one with the Xmas bells. :P

I recieved my copy last week and I listen to it every night while "trying" to sleep...I don't really like the drum-beats parts, but the synth/ambient parts are very relaxing.Actually after the first few tracks, which are just noise,Devlab becomes more interesting. The dialogue-track(....I really come from outter space?...) and the bell-track are my favourites!!
But to be honest,as mentioned before,if Devlab was made by another artist,I probably would't even bother listening to it a second time.I listen to rock and metal mostly but I'm open to all styles of music. When I first listened to Devlab,I was confused, cause I was expecting something like an extended version of "The Death Of Music"....anyway it growed in me like Physicist and SYL....now I want Devlab II :D

I think that you should trying to THINK during this sound, and don't use it for falling asleep(too much going on in this recording!) This is a great AMBIENT album, thus thinking about it will destory the intent. listen to it while doing boring/repitive tasks and let it sink in!
anyway, i enjoy it this way, is a great listen to when drunk and at home album.

I receided my copy about a week ago
I'm drinking beer which is something I dont normally do and listening to Devlab
Its quite an interesting work
I find it leaves your imagination to run wind with noise and interpretations
I'm about halfway through and so far it has scared me shitless a couple of times
freaky stuff
Next week I might hit a joint and listen to it again
While net surfing
Even though it has only just begun to grow on me I'm starting to think this is possibly one of Devs greatests gifts to the chemically tinged

I got my copy today. However listening to it through my work computer's crummy little speakers does not give me much room to analyze it. Comparing it to Eko is kinda silly in that Eko was, at least, coherent arrangements in terms of actual songs.

Devlab reminds me of the background noise soundtrack to a movie......take a horror flick or sci-fi fantasy film. Lots of random samples and synthesized audio. There are parts that are very beautiful, for want of a better word, to listen too. Other parts are so random and jumbled that one has to listen to it many times to make any sense out of it. The rest is like walking through the Amittyville house.

I'm sure it will take several listens to really give fair judgment. It has it's place in Devin-History and that is not a bad thing.

I recieved the album a few weeks ago and have listened it through LOTS of times. One thing that gets me is that it sounds different every time you listen to it. There is so much going on that I can only assemble a little at the time and my focus is always changing from time to time, so in that way it's quite a exiting listen. Headphones recommended! ;)

I was very exited when I first heard that he was going to do an ambient album, since I really, really love the way he uses keyboard-textures and noice in his songs. There's a whole lot going on in the background on most of his other projects that is kinda hard to hear, but it just completes the whole "wall of sound"-experience.

I like Devlab a lot! It's nice to be able to hear the stuff that's generally in the background, up front for once :)
Thanks Dev!

btw.. I think this is my first post.. hmm hope I don't seem like a complete moron ;)

Did anybody play Fallout 3, the video game Devin made the soundtrack for? Does anybody recognize (parts of) that music on Devlab?
Especially the stuff from track 5 onwards would fit, I think.

I just received my copy. Listened to the first two tracks at work; thought "What the hell?" Then I brought it home, smoked a joint, and played the rest of it. What a fucked-up album! But I love it! It's probably one of my stranger CDs, but it's definitely not out of place in my collection.

I wonder if Devin made that horrible intro to intentionally throw people off when they first listen to it. I could do without the retarded-style vocals throughout the album, but the samples are cool, the ambient stuff is mezmerizing, and the techno stuff is just sweet.

This album is cool in the same way that Delirium Cordia is cool, but in some ways it's better. Of course, Delirium Cordia was more of an instrumental ambient album, whereas Devlab is of course far more electronic. The two albums go very well together, actually, and I wonder if Devin was inspired by Fantomas at all.

I don't see how anyone can compare this to farting into a mic. It does have a lot of random noise, but that's certainly not all it is. There is some very cool music and lots of creepy ambient soundscapes, too.

I listened to it today on a $2000 mobile stereo system. Holy crap; for about three minutes I'm drawn deeper into a trance by layer upon layer of trippy sounds, and then all of a sudden BOOOOOM, my whole body is being smothered with bass. There is some great low-frequency stuff on here. You really need to hear this on a good system to fully appreciate it.

I can also tell that this will be a fantastic headphones album.

And it's much, much better while stoned. There's nothing wrong with appreciating music more after smoking weed. It's perfectly natural. It's still okay to listen to while sober, but not nearly as interesting.

It's great to see Devin more fully exploring other facets of his artistic personality. There's really no limit to what the guy can do, when he sets his mind to it.

i was listening to this today on my headphones (the cheap ones that come with a discman) and the sound nearly cut out when one of the sub-bass blasts hit! the bass is intense in some sections...

first listen through i really wasn't expecting the techno stuff... i was just listening to soundscapes one moment and then realised the next moment that i was tapping my feet to a beat... flipped me out a bit :P...
