Overtook GOTG as my favourite film of the year so far.

ain't that a really, really, really awesome movie? One of my favorites of the year too.

watched a lot of German movies recently. Must be my patriotic week or something. Nah, kinda doubt that though.

It's such a pleasure to watch! I never watched a full trailer and although I love Wes Anderson's movies I didn't realise how much it would make me laugh.

We finally saw Godzilla... so disjointed.

On the flip side, saw an indie, Short Term 12. Excellent movie. Great writing, acting and story. It's a heavy subject but the movie is not overly dramatic and has lighter moments too.

Have this on the list to watch!

finally watched Snowpiercer and loved it. Tilda Swinton stole the show as usual. Also watched Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. Which was OK I guess. Not nearly as good as the first one with quite a bit of filler material actually, at least it seemed to me that way. Some continuity issues are to be found as well.

I just re-watched Contact, with Jodie Foster. I remember watching it when it came out, I was 7 or 8. I always remembered, even from a young age, that it was a really unique, deep movie. And I wanted to see if it was as beautiful as my memories led me to believe. It's much more than that. It's just one of those movies about aliens and outer space that had a really unique view and story. So many surprises, and twists that you wouldn't expect. And watching it now, I catch all the religion vs. science undertones that just add to the depth of the story, in my opinion.

Also, I knew I wasn't crazy to think of the movie when I listened to The Hummer when it came out. Equation uses the piano theme and it's Jodie Foster from the movie repeating "I had no idea.." over and over at the end. (It repeats again in The Abacus.) Not to mention, Cosmic Surf always made me think of what I now remember as Pensacola.

This will remain in my top favorite movies. Would highly, highly recommend to anyone who likes a good thinking movie. :)

RocknRolla - Seen this ages ago so didn't really remember anything about it (Butler and Newton "dance" scene I did remember...). Not bad but not best Guy Ritchie either, all very familiar if seen previous movies from director.

The Lego Movie

A lot of fun, even if it might come off as one giant advertisement! :) Recommended for everyone who played with Lego during childhood.

Oh, and epic spaceship guy is epic.

^When he finally built his spaceship and rockets about, I think I laughed for a solid 6 minutes.

well, another year has passed and it's Shocktober again, yay! So I'm gonna watch at least one horror movie a day. I hope Sean's gonna check in at some point too!

Anyways, first movie I watched is called Afflicted, a found footage movie. Yeaaaaaah I know, that genre is so overused now. BUT Afflicted was actually the best found footage movie I've seen so far. The 2 main characters, who also directed the movie and wrote the script, are instantly likeable and they're doing a really good job making their experiences believable while at the same time adding enough creepy, memorable scenes to make this an enjoyable horror flick. Camera work's great too, I'd go as far as saying it's the best I've seen in any found footage movie so far. I think I'd definitely watch it again.

OK, let's see...

on October 2nd I watched a French (I believe?) home invasion horror flick called 'Home Sweet Home' which really freaked me out. Very creepy and believable. The psychopath in that movie really does a convincing job. It may not be for everyone as there's of course no real story to the movie. But if you take it for what it is, it does deliver the goods. Oh and it's bloody as hell too!

then on October 3rd I watched The Woman. Which was actually pretty darn good. It's basically about a family that captures a wild woman in the woods and they try to 'civilize' her. Unfortunately both father and son are completely insane and/or rapists and only the women are good people. Not sure what genre I'd attach that one to. Rape and revenge maybe? Maybe. Dunno. I usually really can't handle rape in movies. But when 'The Woman' goes all berzerk in the end it's just lovely and completely over the tops. It's comic book violene more than it is anything else, really.

and then on October 4th I watched, what many would consider to be the world's first horror movie, Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari. So weird, so beautiful and sooooo good! It's recently been released on Blu-ray and I'm amazed how good it looks. FWMS did such a great job restoring it. Of course you can't compare a German silent movie from 1920 with horror movies as we know them today. But this one is still genuinely creepy, so beautifully strange and just so well made that it amazes you each time you watch it just how much ahead of time it was back then already. Highly recommended. A real masterpiece of German expressionism.

gonna keep these kinda short,,,

October 5th:
Next up was...not really a horror movie....it was The 'Burbs. One of my all time favorite movies. Watched it often as a kid and still enjoy it. The humor is just great. I know it's not really a horror movie but there's cannibals in it so I guess that kinda at least counts as a Halloween worthy movie.

October 6th:
Night of the Comet was the next one. And that's a total 1980's cheese fest with girls that have huge mountains of hair on their heads and zombies that can actually talk and fight. Well, OK it's technically not really zombies. It's human beings that are slowly rotting because they had contact with a comet, or its radiation I guess. But they look like zombies. Cheesy zombies. And I guess this is also not really a horror flick but a postapocalyptic cheese fest. But again I think it fits into my Halloween movie marathon.

October 7th:
And then on Tuesday I watched Pumpkinhead 2. Oh boy. This is pure 90's horror cheese gold! The dialogue is so awful in this movie that it's totally awesome at the same time. The Pumpkinhead monster looks so shitty, it's unintentionally hilarous. I remember the first Pumpkinhead movie scared the shit out of me when I was a kid. That just goes to show that just about ANYTHING scares the shit out of you when you're a kid.

ok, and on it goes....

October 8th:

Savaged : Savaged was actually pretty good for a low-budget horror flick. It's sort of like the bastard child of I Spit On Your Grave and The Crow. And it's very bloody and violent too. But it's comic book violence, nothing that would be realistic in any way. The blood and gore that is. Of course there's a rape scene which is always, always, ALWAYS very uncomfy to watch. But the movie was still pretty darn good. It's not for everyone though.

October 9th:

A Tale of 2 Sisters : VERY good Korean psychological horror movie. Actually I'm not quite sure if it really is a horror movie. Let's say it's a thriller with horror elements. It's really difficult to say anything about the movie without spoiling anything. So all I'm gonna say is that anyone into Asian horror should check this out, it's quite different and really good.

October 10th:

Fright Night ...nope not the remake with Colin Farrell. Watched the original from '85 and it was great as usual. Pretty cheesy and campy of course, it is a movie from the 80's after all but let's be honest, those are usually the best ones, heh. It's basically about a teenager who discovers that a lady killing vampire moved in next to him. I've never seen the remake but I'm quite sure it's nowhere near as good as this.

October 11th
Christine next up was one of John Carpenter's movies from way back when his movies were still awesome. Christine is no exception. In this movie a young highschool kid buys his first car without knowing that it's a possessed, murdering, jealous car which also turns its owner into a prick, heh. Sounds silly and I guess it kinda is but it's the awesome kind of silly :D

October 12th

El Dia De La Bestia well, if you know any of Alex de la Iglesia's movies then you know they are all completely nuts. And this one's no exception. Saw this one many years go on DVD but then somehow lost my DVD and it never resurfaced. But now, at last, it was released on Blu-ray over here in Germany. Was expensive enough (40 Euros) but worth every penny. In this movie a priest discovers that the antichrist is set to be born on Christmas eve in a Spanish town. But he doesn't know the exact location so he does all sorts of bad things to catch the devil's attention. Very crazy stuff and again not for everyone but I love it.

Halloween 6 producer's cut. As it was one of the selling points of the box set (and as I've recently watched every main feature in succession, barring the 8th film), I decided to finally give this one a view, having previously never seen it as it was only available as a bootleg.
I was more underwhelmed by this than I thought I would be. While there are some story and dialogue points that make more sense here than what was briefly (if at all) noted in the theatrical version, it amounts to a convoluted finale that's both hammed up and strangely hollow in comparison, though I found myself more accepting of the incest references than the expanded arch-villainy of the druid cult.
It also gave itself away in parts, which was distracting in spite of the fact I've seen this movie several times before. This version is also much less brutal. Partly necessitated by story, however a few death scenes that are present to both films are milder here, which leaves a dissatisfied feeling.
Overall I'm glad I saw it, however I'll probably just stick to the theatrical cut if I choose to re-visit this movie again.
