I've been dying to see Boyhood for months. Did it get a wide release? Because it's only playing in the arthouse theaters around here.
Not that that's a problem, but their popcorn blows, so I'd rather see it in a megaplex. Maybe if it does good business, it will get a wider release. :)

I live in New York, so we get everything. It's playing at the IFC center, but I doubt it'll get wider release until Oscar season. You should go see it.

Going to see it this weekend. :)

Guardians of the Galaxy, which was a lot better than I expected. The trailers turned me off but some recommendations changed my mind; I'm glad I did.
I wouldn't call it the best in the Marvel universe (as hyped), however I will say it's worthy of top tier praise; there's plenty of energy and creativity to make it stand out, as there usually is with a James Gunn film, and I like how they introduced and evolved the characters. Worth seeing.
Spoiler: show
Though I have to wonder if the Howard the Duck appearance post-credits was a one off or if Marvel is considering re-booting him. I was amused by how many people didn't get the reference, though.

I went to see it with my son last week. I was favourably surprised as I, too, had been put off by the trailers. I'd no idea it was tied into the whole Marvel universe though. But yes, it was an immensely fun and light hearted movie. A few funny plot holes but I forgave them just for the rip-snorting action and swashing of buckles going on. The humour was welcome too. Definitely would watch again.

I'm off to see it on Wednesday. My first movie in a cinema in over a year, so it's fair to say I'm looking forward to it ;)

I've been binging on Hayao Miyazaki's films this past week. Very nostalgic and still love them after all these years. And I'm glad to say that Princess Mononoke didn't scare the shit out of me this time.

Attended the Melbourne International Film Festival and saw the following:

Why Don't You Play In Hell?
Japanese action-comedy (with a title that sounds like a Stewie Griffin line) about an amateur film crew who unwittingly become involved in a Yakuza gang war. Rather than panic, they decide it's a perfect opportunity to capitalize upon.
Loaded with stylized violence (including one of the funniest sword fights I've seen in this kind of movie), barrels of blood, twisted humor and maniacal acting from pretty much the whole cast. Jun Kunimura (from Kill Bill, among others) gives a particularly note-worthy performance as one of the gang bosses.
An absolute treat for fans of weird Japanese cinema. 8/10.

Among The Living
French horror where a group of teenage boys skip school to hang out at an abandoned film studio, only to stumble upon a strange masked man carrying a bloodied woman into one of the buildings. It's not long before he has the boys in his sights and hunts them down.
There are times when this movie follows the formula of your average slasher; clich

Guardians of the Galaxy... I'm sure a small part of me was just happy to be at the movies again, but I had a blast. Drax stole the show for me with his unintentional one liners. Not a perfect film by any means but probably my favourite Marvel movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy is the best movie I think I've seen in numerous years, I absolutely loved it. Seen it twice in theaters, don't remember the last time I did that.

Just watched Nymphomaniac 1 & 2, man... crazy but powerful movie that dissects how society looks at sexuality. Until Lars Von Trier killed it in the last 90 seconds. What a cop out ending.

GOTG is going to get a lot of air time at our house as the kids grow up, along with the Goonies and the original Star Wars trilogy.

The bits n pieces I've seen so far have at least convinced me that the new SW films will be less awful than the prequels.

Hey if you are into anime films at all you should give a watch for Mamoru Hosoda's films. Personally I prefer Hosoda's character models to Ghibli and the story structures are a lot more familiar for western audiences too. Wolf Children is pretty damn good. Once you get past the odd premise.
