And they looked a lot like the Alien from the Cloverfield movie, just not as cool. I mean, it was not bad, I would probably give it a 6.5 - 7.0 out of 10 too. I just expected it to be much better. I expected the bastard child of 'The Impossible' and 'Pacific Rim', sorta. You know, great drama that has an emotional impact on you AND memorable monster action.

That's cool. I thought the MUTOs were more like Cloverfield meets Starship Troopers, personally.

I also saw Captain America: The Winter Soldier not long before as well. Now THAT was a fucking great movie. I'll be so bold as to say better than The Avengers (about on par with the first Iron Man). More mature and realistic than the previous Marvel films (of that universe) while still maintaining the series' integrity. Not looking forward to Guardians of the Galaxy, however. That looks, well, stupid. Not Ninja Turtles stupid (FUCK THAT) but not interesting to me.

they're probably gunna really destroy the Ninja Turtles with that upcoming movie. :(

Watched Grave of the Fireflies after I haven't seen it for probably 10 years. Still has the same emotional impact on me and it looks quite awesome in HD too. Glad I bought the Blu-ray, despite the typically insane Studio Ghibli movie price. It's most certainly one of the best anti-war movies I have seen.
What's interesting though is that in Germany this movie is considered suitable for 6 year olds. I mean, sure you can watch this movie with your 6 year old child....if you really, really, really hate your kid

Also watched Princess Mononoke, that one I like to think I have seen before. But I'm not sure. Some of the scenes looked super familiar so I think I might have seen it on TV before. But anyways, it was friggin' great too. Great animation, story and characters. Also maybe not really suitable for young children because there's quite a bit of graphic violence in it. Limbs get cut off, heads get shot off. So yeah, I probably won't watch this one with my little niece, heh.

Silver Linings Playbook... Eh. I mean, Lawrence was great and he was pretty good, and Jacqui Weaver always kills it, but the screenplay was just a bit thin and the ending too neat for my liking.

American Hustle... Much better from David O Russell. I loved the unpredictability and complexity of the characters. The late 70s feel was so well done and reminded me of Boogie Nights (which I absolutely love).

After Earth... A turd.

By far the best film I've seen this year has been Cheap Thrills. Really intense, black comedy that hits like a crazed mash up of Trading Places, Battle Royale and Jackass. The movie starts with a chap learning he and his small family are to be evicted from their home, right before his attempts to ask for a raise at work end with him being made redundant. Rather than go home and tell his wife the bad news, he elects to go for a drink whereupon he runs into his old high school friend. The chap was from a good family, went to college but despite this is a perpetual failure. The friend was from a rough upbringing and has since turned to debt collection and the like as a means to make a living. They wind up at the table of a wealthy and charismatic gent (David Koechner being immense!) who's out trying to show his young, beautiful and terminally bored wife a good time for her birthday. He starts throwing money at the two lads in exchange for completing various dares he can think of and needless to say, things escalate quite quickly. I'm not sure anything I can say can do justice to what happens beyond that point, not for the squeamish or easily offended I would imagine. Also must mention that the final shot is one of the most pitch perfect close outs to a film I've ever seen. An absolute gem. A horrible, horrible, wonderful little gem.

I second this sentiment. I bought it on Blu-ray a couple of months ago, a blind buy, and I do not regret it. Really good little flick.

is it at least unintentionally funny? Because a turd can still be sorta fun to watch...with drunk friends

Oh definitely. Unintentional laughs from start to finish. The weird hybrid accents they put on are worth a few chuckles on their own.

There's one scene towards the end... My wife predicted the cheesiest outcome as a joke, I cracked up... And it happened.

well, now I kind of HAVE to see it. Just don't know how I'll do that. I don't use any of the streaming services. Don't really wanna buy it either, heh. Oh well, I'll find a way.

^ Why not rent a copy? Unless you don't have any of those stores in your region.
It's pretty much the only way I'll watch a bad movie out of curiosity without buying it, unless it's on TV.
That reminds me, Star Trek V is on tonight.

X-men - Days of the future past. Suitably darker tones in this one, also humorous bits didn't seem forced. Very good.

Edge of Tomorrow. Say what you will of Cruise, but in this one he pretty much nails it. Excellent.

Edge of Tomorrow

fuckin loved it. Great mix of sci-fi, action and humor. There will be people who might complain that it's similar to Source Code in certain ways. I guess the sci-fi genre is the only genre where people go apeshit when a movie borrows some ideas from another movie. But in my opinion it's no problem when a movie borrows a few ideas as long as it's not a complete rip-off. If you wanna know what a rip-off is then watch pretty much any movie by The Aslyum. Edge of Tomorrow however was a real delight. And I agree, say what you want about Tom Cruise, and I agree that he's a pretty fruity cake, but he's in some really, really good movies. And this one is no exception. I agree with the praise it's getting on imdb and rotten tomatoes.

Looking forward to it, despite the fact that Cruise is in it. I've lost count of the number of times I've said that!

I watched a surprisingly funny little movie the other night called "Austenland." The dialogue was a real hoot and there were tons of hilarious little scenes going on in the background of the main focus of attention.

My mother, my aunt, and every woman in my family/extended family LOVES Jane Austen. So I too have seen Austenland, and unlike every other manifestation of Jane's work, I enjoyed it. It was surprisingly funny. :)

I haven't been to see many movies recently, the wallet's been locked up. But the wife and I did manage to see Monuments Men a few months ago. I really liked that one. My dad has a deep, profound love of the arts, so it was really cool knowing almost everything they were referring to.

Saw Baadassssss! and A Scanner Darkly.

Baadassssss! was interesting in that it's based on the life of the father of the director and main actor, Mario Van Peebles. If it was just a fictional tale it would be less interesting, but as it is is an interesting look at the rise of blaxploitation cinema. I also enjoyed the absurdly over the top alpha male way of looking things that Melvin Van Peebles apparently had.

I always thought that the cel shaded look of ASD would annoy me after a while, but it turns out that I loved it and it really helps to deliver the viewer into that paranoid, sketchy world of drug users. Good fun and Robert Downey Jr owned the film as usual.
