Talk about other artists here (even though they all rip off Meshuggah)

From yesterday at Werchter Boutique:

Ghost - only caught their last few songs apparently as they were done about 2 minutes after I entered. Sounded good though, and must've looked funky too with their spooky backdrop and white costumes.

Gojira - loud, heavy and tight. They couldn't really get the crowd going, maybe it was too much too early on a very hot and long day, but I really enjoyed the performance.

Zero Channel - skipped them as the shade was too nice to get out of; also, lunch. Apparently they're quite big in Belgium, which in itself is unsurprising as they're Belgians themselves, but never heard of them. From what I heard they seemed to blend a lot of modern metal without being too original, so I dunno. Maybe the stage act was better, but I didn't see it.

Mastodon - impressive, although both vocalists weren't at the top of their game. They were much better at the 013 venue I saw them in a few months ago. They played Octopus Has No Friends though, so that was pretty awesome. And the other non-bearded guitar player proved himself to have a really nice grunt during Blood And Thunder. :)

Soundgarden - probably my band of the day. Chris Cornell has an unbelievable set of pipes on him, and they were pretty much flawless through their entire set. Most classics were played, apart from maybe my favorite song by them (Superunknown). Really, really good.

Metallica - opened with some old classics (Hit The Lights, MoP, etc), then playing their Black Album in custom order with the big hits at the end. I dunno, they put up a good show, but I expect less sloppiness in the playing, and not just from Lars Ulrich. And the fact they played only one song from beyond their Black Album catalog (Hell And Back, from Beyond Magnetic) makes me think they're not trying with the "new" stuff anymore either (that's 20 years being represented by one song...). And I think that's what made me lose interest in them. Fortunately, they weren't really the reason I went there anyway.

They were on Sonisphere Warsaw - opening the thing, with very shitty slot at 4PM or so (kinda like Devin @ Sonisphere 2k11). I weren't there, but I suspect attendance was lousy. Saw the short material on the fest on the TV later that day, with some random concertgoer being delighted with Lars' drumming skills. Fucking hell, there was Mario Duplantier going all animal on drums on the very same day yet the Lars was hero of the day. World's unfair huh.

I see what you did there. Or maybe that was unintentional. :P

Went to Download, saw Fear Factory, Breed 77, The Defiled, SOiL, Axe Wound (who were gaaaash) and DTP. Then nearly died from the cold though. It's cool though, quick change into my jammies, a cuppa tea, glass of wine and a houmous sandwich in bed and I was aaaaite B)

Given their output in those 20 years, that's a fucking result, dude. But I hear what you are saying. I was a monstrous Metallica fan from back when they were great, but I don't think I could bother seeing them again, even to hear them play pre Black Album all the way. I watched some of the anniversary gigs on YT and it just made me depressed, tbh. I watched a Big 4 concert and it made me want to weep. Just fucking awful. Thrash Metal reduced to a slick money-harvesting machine.

Macabre, with two local support acts.
The support acts (Internal Nightmare and The Mung) were pretty good, and fun to headbang to, although Internal Nightmare should have had more crowd involvement.
As for Macabre, they were fucking awesome. And as this was at a pub venue, the sound and proximity to the band was a far cry better than last time I saw them. That said, I didn't have ear plugs tonight, so I'm gonna be a bit sore tomorrow. On the other hand, I'm gonna be sore from going nuts at the front of the stage.

Sad part: had to leave shortly after Macabre's set ended, in order to catch the last train and avoid spending $50 on a cab home. Considering the douchebaggery on said train, I probably would have paid the $50, if it meant a possible photo with the band.

Which brings me to weirdly awesome part: after The Mung finished their set, I went to the men's room to take a leak. As I'm finishing up and turning to wash my hands, in walks Corporate Death. Figuring the urinal was not the best place to tell him how awesome he is, I just washed my hands and made sure to give him room to get to the sink (this men's room was pretty compact).

do me already!!

he seems to be one of those folks that are in a relatively well known band but do not hesitate to be amongst the regular folks, heh. Spotted him at a festival once where he did some T-shirt shopping

Nasum - they were awesome, put a lot of energy into the show and got an excellent mosh pit going. Keijo Niinimaa does the band justice, plus he's also a great stage presence. It was fun to headbang to Shadows with a dozen others slamming into you.

The support bands were also cool; Psycroptic got a response almost as big as the main band.

A great night out and a fond farewell.

Xerath...twas sweet! apart from being in the worst venue ever...with possibly the drunkest woman I've ever seen dancing like she was in some poppy club...there was a point when the bf and I were stifling tears of laughter at the sight of poppy lady dancing like mad, circle pit with a seriously high number of large men, and man in a top hat all in the same scene
