Thanks.. Actually found out that another one is HIV-positive as well. They were a couple. He's been losing a lot of weight the last year, 16 kg or more, and been hospitalized a couple of times. He's been saying that the weight is because of him working so much, that he's very stressed etc, but I guess that wasn't the truth. The other one seems to be fine-ish. Just hope he doesn't get the flu or anything.

I've known a few people who were HIV-positive, and though one has passed on years ago, the others are still living happy and productive lives. Life definitely isn't easy for them, but they are still going strong.

It amazes me how little HIV is even discussed anymore. Now, being a child of the 80's, awareness was shoved down our throats, and I think the fear of that virus has been burned into my DNA. I rarely hear it mentioned anymore by anyone, be it the media or anywhere. I'm not sure about the rest of the world, but here in the USA it has been almost brushed under the rug. That is scary. I know that they taught my son about it in school last year, and the wife and I have discussed it many times with him, but are other people educating their children? Is the information for prevention of catching and/or spreading the virus readily available for those who may need it?

I was a munchkin in the 80's, but I recall that fear of HIV & AIDS you speak of as well, and it carried through into the 90's (until the late 90's anyway). It's still relevant after all this time.

At my school (and indeed most schools here) we have a few classes about HIV in year 9, but only as it relates to STI's. There definitely needs to be more efforts for HIV awareness, as Paul said the governments seem to have left it alone.

It was a huge thing in the mid to late 80s, when I was a kid, to educate people about AIDS, HIV and all that. Unfortunately, they weren't really sure about much of it, and it generally just confused a lot of kids.

You have my sympathies.
I can relate to your last sentence. My concern is I'll never see my grandfather alive again, considering I live half the world away - the last time I saw him and my grandmother was over 10 years ago, and he's since had his own spate of health problems; grandma too. Proud of them both for still continuing to live their lives happily.
