On his vote for the legalization of Gay Marriage in New York:
"You get to the point where you evolve in your life where everything isn’t black and white, good and bad, and you try to do the right thing," McDonald, 64, told reporters.

"You might not like that. You might be very cynical about that. Well, fuck it, I don’t care what you think. I’m trying to do the right thing.

"I’m tired of Republican-Democrat politics. They can take the job and shove it. I come from a blue-collar background. I’m trying to do the right thing, and that’s where I’m going with this."

Dude. Didn't believe it would happen, very happy for New York (it's pride week right now in SF). Very happy for my gay friends out there.

First up, I agree. This was excellent news for same sex couples in the US. I'm yet to hear a convincing non-religious argument against same sex marriage receiving the exact same recognition as the old hetero thing.

Also, we've just spent a month in the US (got a couple of weeks to go) and it's been disappointing (but not surprising) to see that the US is as polarised as ever. The combative 'us vs them' mentality is so ingrained in the psyche of so many people, regardless of their background or views. Of course not everyone buys into it but it's so commonplace that it really stands out. There are many elements of US culture that I find odd as a visiting Aussie but that I appreciate are just different from my norm and that I am happy to observe and, wherever possible, participate in. But this hyper partisan approach... In a pragmatic society it just doesn't seem to serve a purpose other than to service the needs of a few.

Sorry about the rant!

Hooray for NY and for another step towards true equality!

Juz: Absolutely man, people are people, no matter who they are, and most of our rage at each other is over silly different technicalities. I admit hostility of any kind really tends to bother me, so then I kinda get wrapped in the "game" so to speak myself.

When I worked for Nintendo I got to see a lot of the places in the country, and just got to talking to people a lot, I've come to find that most people, even if they're of different beliefs and backgrounds, tend to be genuinely nice... however our culture was born and raised on being shitty to "the other," so it's kind of to be expected. Sad, innit?

EDIT: LOVED THAT CONCERT LAST NIGHT. SOME GUY TEVIN DOWNSEND REALLY BROUGHT IT.

Good to hear about New York. I find it strange that intolerant people choose harmless matters to bitch about while neglecting injustices in other areas, just to keep their sensibilities 'clean'. As a religious person myself, it is heartbreaking to see those who misrepresent their religion and preach hate.
If Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha and others were around now, they would support gay marriage one hundred per cent.

/rant.

Love is pretty awesome.

The whole gay marriage in New York thing just makes me smile like crazy. :D All though I can never express my disgust towards putting a minority's rights to a public vote enough - I can only imagine what this must be like for anyone who does not fit entirely into the heteronormative paradigm. HOORAY FOR NEW YORK!

Hooray for love, kindness and tolerance!

Yeah, I've watched quite a bit of telly over here and it seems that whenever I do a flick through the channels I'll hit one idiot screaming about the media or politicians on "the other side", then run into an idiot from "the other side" doing the exact same thing in return, ad infinitum. The self-important, desperate hand-wringing is painful to watch. CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, whatever... so little of it is valid journalism. The only positive I can see out of it is that Maher and Stewart can both be very funny at times, and Fox News can be (unintentionally) HILARIOUS viewing.

I wouldn't necessarily advocate everyone becoming centrist panderers, as that's what Aussie politicians have become... obsessed with claiming the middle ground so as not to offend anyone. It's just as ineffective. I think politics needs strong ideas and vision, but I don't think either method works too well. Maybe I'll just invent an entirely new political system that allows for the implementation of visionary, non-partisan policy, whilst avoiding corrupt influence AND following the will of the people. :P

Oh, and I find the same thing, travelling around the US... in general people are nice, friendly and decent to each other. You get the odd dickhead, but that's the same everywhere. But mention politics when they think they're amongst friends, and some people start rabidly foaming at the mouth because it's "all their fault, not ours". Blech!

So... what's awesome? We hit 20 weeks pregnancy today. Halfway! Woohoo!

STUDIO HAS WALLS AND A FLOOR!

Image

Doing the ceiling tomorrow then priming the door if I got time (I've not done this ENTIRELY on my own, I have a dad and his best friend who are both retired DIY obsessives), then fitting the mains, florescent tubes, spotlights, heat tubes, wee bit of decorating and that half will be complete! Then the next bit's gonna be like a conservatory type thing with benches and storage. There's even a wee courtyard type thing! :D
