SW would hands be down the one to do it.

However, would surround kill the intended sound? As we only have two ears, stereo is supposed to be more than enough to give us a '3D' image. But please correct me if that's wrong.

and for MR been yes you are correct.. instead of a 5.1 encode i'd rather have dev record the next album in binaural (dual mics set in a dummy head with ears) which would give you the realistic soundstaging. if dev did that i'd be the first metal album to be recorded binauraly. (ki is the only album that really has any soundstage but thats due to its minimalistic mix and content its really hard to get soundstage with a wall of sound.)

binaural microphone. they use microphones set into dummys with realistic shaped ears and ear canals to record sounds like we hear them thus producing extremely accurate spatial distance and accuracy

This. Fuck, if Steven Wilson, Devin, or Meshuggah made a binaural recording, I would be jizzing on a regular basis.

Hey guys, I haven't heard the album yet, but I read in some reviews that there is a real orchestra in the mix. Can someone confirm that? I check these forums quite regularly but don't remember reading a post by Devin saying so. If someone could direct me to the source, I'd appreciate it.

Cheers!

Clearly you've missed the Deconstrupdates Devin posted on youtube (check out his channel, username is poopynuggeteer). You'll see some snippets of the recording process with the orchestra. :)

@NFF: A dummy-head recording only makes sense with live (acoustic) instruments, i think. I have a recording of organ-music for example which is really great on headphones. Or ambience-sounds, like the thunderstorm on "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" by Alan Parsons.

Thanks for the youtube link, guys. They're awesome. Does anyone know if the orchestra was tracked in Canada or Europe? The streets and everything look so European it's not funny. Then again, there's no reason why Devin would track them away from home?

P.S. I'm at work so I couldn't listen to the video. I just watched it.

Someone a little earlier said this album reminded them of a play. I don't know if it's cause of Dev's explenation as being about meeting the Devil and then being presented the Cheeseburger by a choir of Angels, but I get a real heavy Divine Comedy vibe from this record.

Just me?

I know the wanking guitars near the middle and end in the song Deconstruction are probably poking at the bands that take that stuff seriously but it seems kind of out of place on the album as a whole, i guess it makes it sound more chaotic and crazy, that is probably the only flaw on this album that i can think of. The other guitar solos are fantastic and as always on a DT album, well placed.
