Definitely, constructive criticism is almost always a good thing, and healthy for the process of creating and improving on doing the things you love to do. Fretburn, I agree that I didn't really see anyone acting with that attitude (on this forum anyways), everyone is just stating their opinions.

Monstrously good album. Particularly the first three tracks, Stand just blows me away with how it builds up.

Going to have to put myself into the category who just doesn't 'get' having flatulence and fart jokes in the title track though. I understand where Dev's coming from by just letting himself go and putting the most ridiculous levels of his pysche into the song but I need a track to have a good hook or lyrical melody to really grip me and Deconstruction lacks that one aspect that'll ensure I listen to it again and again.

The album's a great insight into Dev's frame of mind though, some of the lyrics in PtL and Stand are excellent.

Honestly, I don't think there's anything wrong with dissenting opinions, anyway. Reacting to, analyzing, and expressing the way in which art evokes emotion is actually quite healthy for both the artist and the viewer/listener.

yessir.

btw,

...100 balls...? anyone?

...old ladies?

ah fuck it. :)

It's really cool that we have so many people here on the forums who are at least open minded enough to accept and embrace the ever evolving state of Devin's music :)
sure, there are always going to be people who are stuck in the past, but generally that's because a particular album from back in the day may have had some personal significance to them at that time in their lives.

I personally embrace change, I feel like I'm growing along with the music, it has become more like a journey than just listening to "the new album" when it comes out.
As i get older, I'm turning into a grumpier old man, so anything heavy and angry without direction or purpose just annoys the piss out of me nowadays
Deconstruction is self aware, i feel it doesn't need to impose any viewpoint on anyone or try to make you feel like shit. its more like "fuck dude, just enjoy life and roll with the punches, don't read too deeply into things you cant change" (at least that's what it does for me :) )

It's also extremely rare that you'll find an artist out there who is so open to discussing perspectives and points of view with the fans, despite not having any real obligation to do so. it's awesome to get those pieces of insight into the creative process and understand how things come together.

SuperKarma I think you're posts, while making some interesting points, are somewhat negative... and a bit rooted in the past...just about all of Devins albums have their quirky and humorous moments... Alien, City, Terria included...

Devin has just recently completed his most successful European tour on the back of his most commercially successful (I think) album, Addicted, with very few people lamenting the SYL 'classics' - the DTP is selling out venues SYL didn't...

I think Ziltoid will be/is already considered a 'classic' up there with the other 'classics' and as far as I'm aware the only album Devin has performed in it's entirety - (due to popular demand!)

...and Deconstruction just gets better with every listen - and I have no doubt will also be considered 'a classic'

Absolutely. I've found everyone else's insight at least in today's discussion to be not only cordial, but very interesting.

My tastes tend to run towards things like Kurt Vonnegut, Terry Gilliam, Wes Anderson, Frank Zappa way of looking at things. You know, meeting high and low art forms and taking very rational serious subjects and filling them with very low-brow humor.

That's called travesty, at least in the classical comedy sense.

Dev's music tends to fall somewhere in that.

Just as a small aside, my 11 year-old son was laughing so hard at the diarrhea in the title song, I thought he was going to actually shit himself. He wanted it on his iPod, and I obliged. I went to the store and bought another shirt.

Just thought I'd share.

im really enjoying that little tidbit of electronic music in TMM with the brass section. i really think dev could do a full electronic album. i really do enjoy your electronic/ambient stuff.

and back on to decon. im not havy any troubles "hearing the music" musicaly this album is a masterpiece... thats my way of going through music.. i ignore the lyrics and focus on the music then once i am famillar i focus on the lyrics and try and wrap my meger little brain around them at a later date.
