Stay safe Chimairacle... Yasi's looking pretty scary. They're saying evac time is over, and if you're home get battened down and stay in shelter. I'm sure you're all over it and will be fine.

I lived in Queensland for several years until 2008... what a horrible, horrible, horrible month.

I was going to complain about coming Friday being a so-called Warm Sweater Day, where the heat all over the university will be turned to night mode during the day in order to increase environmental awareness or whatever. But it seems a bit trivial after these last posts. :P

And then the ignorant will comment on how this means there's no way there can be global warming if it's become this cold.

There no way that more cold water introduced can cause a difference weather patterns. No way at all. Nope. Now I'm going to go outside and look directly into the sun.

And I was complaining about our -2F a few months ago. :|

Uh why? Why were you going to complain, I mean? Sounds a good idea.

I see what you did there.

I don't know why we need to be reminded of the environment/saving energy. We're a university, a research facility. Most of our research is -when looking at the big picture- aimed towards more efficient use of material, less pollution and waste, less dependence on fossil energy, etc. We're aware of it, BECAUSE IT'S WHAT WE DO ALL DAY. I doubt this campaign is impressing anyone and instead being more annoying than helpful.

Hmmm, possibly. Although I spend quite a bit of time in th eoffices of places like the Energy Saving Trust and universities specialising in climate change research, sustainability etc (I do this ind of thing for a living) and it always surprises me how it is about 23 degrees celcius and the students and staff are wandering around in t-shirts in January. It's all very well looking at the big picture but if you fail to notice that you are dressed for summer in midwinter and turning up the thermostat to compensate, then perhaps you need Warm Sweater day to remind you. Its been Warm sweater day in my house since October.

NB - not getting at you personally, Pim. I note from your photos you sport a fine range of knitwear, and that Rupert Bear scarf is extra Greenie brownie points.

A fair point. I'm not denying that there are such hypocrites (for lack of a better term) also here in Eindhoven, just arguing that the campaign may be more effective for a different crowd.

Maybe you just need better insulation. ;)

Hey, I'm not dead!

We actually got real lucky, the glory of the Internet kept me in contact with everyone closeby for most of the night, most people reported a lot of junk ending up in their backyards or trees falling on rooves/sheds/annexes but I don't think anyone I know suffered any real damage, and everyone's okay.. One of my friends' rooves apparently came off...and what did the idiot do, start running like a maniac down the street. Bit of a knucklehead that one. :|

From what I've heard there haven't been any reports of serious injury or death as a result of the cyclone anywhere in North Queensland so that's really good. The smaller towns in between us and Cairns got the worst of it. I feel sorry for those in Innisfail, it was only in 06 that they got smashed by Cyclone Larry and now they've got to deal with it all again.

To be honest, I'm surprised it wasn't much worse, especially considering it intensified to a category 5 before making land, and on its way over completely obliterated a weather tracking tower thing made to withstand a category 5 cyclone.

At least everyone's okay, that's the main thing! :)

It's so good to hear that you and everyone else are alright! Is your friend ok? After disregarding everything SES have been saying about rooves blowing off?

The poor bananas! How am I going to survive without bananas?
