Okay... I admit it. I am playing catch up. I am collecting all the Devin Townsend CDs that I can get my hands on. I went to the biggest music store I can find here in Edmonton. That would be HMV at West Edmonton Mall. I found Physicist, Ziltoid, and thankfully Addicted (my new favorite). I was specifically looking for Ki and a second copy of Addicted on my second trip, but alas - the cupboards were bare. I have the 2nd copy of addicted on order but where are all the rest? I think it is a travesty that a HUGE store like this doesn't have TWO copies of every CD Devin has produced. I told the store staff that they should load up on all of Devin's CDs - which was met with a blank stare. There is no justice. Devin rocks! I will buy the CDs from the site...
You and I think that Devin rocks, but the fact of the matter is that many many more people think that Lady Gaga rocks, so they'd rather stock up on the stuff that does sell.

I'd love to see a world where Devin and Gaga switched places. It would be far more just for him to
be in her place, celebrated, well paid, incredibly well known and famous...
....
And by that, I do also mean I'd like to see Devin covered in Kermit the frogs. Don't deny that would
be awesome.

I went into an HMV shop years ago and bought a White Zombie CD, La Sexorcisto. The woman at the counter, rather than blankly scan it and take my money, began scrutinizing (with much horror) the artwork and song titles on the back. She then looked at me like I had leprosy, and waited a long two seconds before doing her job and giving me my purchase. Clearly she had no idea the store stocked music other than Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys.
Lady GaGa actually has talent. She's just more interested in commerce, it would seem.

The Hmv megastore in Montreal wasnt so bad, but they reconfigured the place now, and the music section is getting smaller and smaller.
The videogames /dvd and blurays are taking more place.
The staff seemed mostly like indie people.. a few punk and/or goth looking clerks as well. I have gotten my fair share of weird looks as i brought batches of cd's or movies...
Its still the best place to go for cd's, except for the internet that is.

I've noticed that as well. The biggest multimedia chain store in The Netherlands in called "Free Record Shop", even though they hardly stock any records anymore. And what they do have, is far from free but grossly overpriced. Their collection of non-mainstream music (I suppose games and movies just the same, but I never looked at those) has always been pathetic.
My sister gave me a gift voucher for 15 euros to spend at Free Record Shop for my birthday more than a year ago, and I still haven't used it up. Simply because they have nothing that interests me.
And here's me thinking that the alternative/non-mainstream music scene are the people that still actually buy music. If they can still a store willing to sell, that is.

although having sold 5 million records she probably has a better platform for her talent now.
Lady Gaga and Kermit the Frog aside, I find it disheartening the way stores like HMV have gotten away from promoting music - especially "local" musicians. I know that they need to feed demand to remain profitable. However, I too am a customer with consumer demands. They brushed my suggestion of stocking more DT CDs away like I had no valuable input. Because I look the way I do (45 and clean cut), they had an attitude of superiority, and that what I want to listen to has no bearing on what the masses want. They were mistaken... I spent many years as a DJ and have a music collection bigger than the one in their store. My point being - if one person actually goes up to the counter and asks them to bring in some CDs, aren't there at least ten more that would buy that CD if it was on the shelf?
And hey... I bought the new Rob Zombie CD at the same time I picked up an old Streetheart CD for my collection - the cashier looked at me like I was bi-polar. LOL
Dev Rocks!

My local HMV sells my mate's band's CDs, I think they're awesome! Also the HMV in Oxford Street is hilariously large.

At least HMV stocks Devy...
"A moment of rest upon the wind, and another woman shall bear me."
I worked at a Virgin Megastore (RIP) for three years, and one thing I'd do is make sure at least one copy of any given album (Physicist aside, I could never get it ordered for some reason) was in stock.
I sold a few Ziltoids personally.
I spread the fuckin' gospel.

Nope. As much as I dislike the selection of these so-called music stores, there really isn't much point in them taking advice from random customers.
Going up to the counter and telling them to stock loads of an artist they've never heard of (which also means no-one ever asked them about said artist before) only reeks of fanboy.

oops I meant 55 million records
5 million isn't much at all. Everyone's done that.

I can't fathom how she quells that much talent so that she can sell records/concert tickets/whathaveyou.
But, I'm rather happy being unambitious.
