I identify with all of you. I come from a death/extreme/core/whatever metal background, so I know how challenging some of it is too play, but alot of it has become so unoriginal and boring. I'm not sure if I just grew out of it because I'm not that angry anymore, or what. If I do listen to it, it's for effect...like, workout music. I still think most bands these days are doing a poor job at being extreme. It just doesn't have any humanity anymore. Like, how much tighter can you get? How much higher of a noise gate setting can you get? How much faster? Somewhere along the line, the concept of originality or writing a good song has been lost. Shit, Morbid Angel was heavier than ANY of these bands in the late 80s!! Or, what about the grindcore scene? I dunno. It is personal preference I guess, but I still haven't heard a band more extreme than Discordance Axis, and they didn't have a bass player! They weren't the fastest either...but that dangerous energy they had has a way of seeping into your veins, and it wasn't about how tight or fast they are (Edit: or about the skill level of playing)... I dunno, maybe I'm full of it.

The problem I have with Entropy's argument is that most Patton fans will immediately say that Patton would be great for any band. He is versatile(as his recordings with DEP show) but he cant be some vocalist whore who just goes to every band so a few people can be happy with the band's vocals. The thing is, Misha likes Spencer's vocals. Acle likes Dan's vocals. They both started their respective bands, and we have no say and what goes down with them. Of course we all have our opinions on who sounds better and whether or not we see them fitting the band.
If you want to hear Patton-esque vocals in a rhythmically based band, wait for Textures' next album with the singer from Cilice.
Of course not. Dev would sound silly in that context, I think. But I didn't mean that I wanted a big name to come in and lead the band. I just would like to hear someone with that versatility and skill (someone like Patton, etc.) because I think I would like it more. I'm not saying they should actually change, and it's not like they're going to. I'm just expressing the opinion that I would like to hear a different style of vocals over that djent-y style of music, not that Acle and Misha are idiots who clearly made the wrong choices.
Cilice's singer is mediocre and not as good as Erik. His (low) harsh vocals sound like Nathan Explosion, which is funny, but I don't think it's his intent.
My overall point is just that I respect the music (& guitar work) of Periphery, Tesseract, etc., but I don't feel that the quality of their vocalists matches the rest of the music, and I'd like to hear someone (even a new act) utilize a different vocal style in the genre.

You can change your guitar tone or switch around your style of playing bass or drums or whatever but with a singer you've sort of got your voice and what you can do with it is what you can do with it... Sure you can improve but you can't just have the immediate change in output that an instrument can have. Nobody could ever hope to keep everyone happy...
I'd rather hear Cynic's vocals from Focus on this djent-y stuff. I think would actually be quite cool. Anyway, the bolded bit says it best.
