i was wearing 20db musicians plugs and my ears were shot this morning :) so yeah, it was *loud*.
it could also have something to do with me smiling like a loon so much that my earplugs were probably not seated correctly ;)

awesome to see the guys on stage having a great damn time while seriously rocking out. fantastic!
the band is seriously tight, the "special guest" segment was giggle, and id go see that again, anywhere, anytime.. :D

Second headlining show ever, working the bugs out. Great sound, lights, visuals etc are works in progress with who can handle it...

Maybe consider this first tour a starting point? I agree about not enough mellow stuff, didn't realize it till I was out here... lots of work to do for the next tour.

2 or 3 more tours and we'll be well versed in ALL the songs, needing to practice this bunch now...

Thanks for your patience with this work in progress all, your comments and observations are very much needed and taken to heart... this stage of it, the 'Devin Townsend Project' is called project as a way of expressing the work in progress nature of it, I need to try things out right now to now what works. The space between the BTBAM tour and Australia was in total about 3 weeks of rehearsal, so I went with the songs we knew and will do the Deep Peace, Universe, Terria, Synchestra, more Infinity for the next tours. (no excuses, just observations!) maybe "Devin Townsend Experience' when it all gets learnt, coreographed, and perfected. :) I need a constant sound man, crew, lighting designer etc...the nature of this music is 'go big or go home' and it can be screwed up by lots of variables... unfortuantely, we're working with what we can get at this point, so again... EVERYTHING is taken into consideration in terms of what the effect of this show is currently, please bring it, I want this to eventually be what we all want.

Thanks for the support in this early stage guys, give me one or two more years, and it should be where it wants to be!

When u play ziltiod on friday in Finland, are you gonna play more ziltiod on saturday? or will you change the setlist on saturday and switch out the ziltiod songs with some new? :D
just wonder :)

Well, I think and would be pleased if the second set would be without Ziltoid songs. The Z gig versions propably wouldn't be topped so why bother? For a festival gig, I'd be happy with a similiar set list to the American support leg but with By Your Command changed to something like Deadhead/Funeral or whatever and propably another one or two songs added (as Festival gigs are like 45 mins right and the support tour was just 30?).

i hear you dev about the lights sound etc.
i was right behind the light panel and the chick who controlled them i am assuming wasnt one of your crew. she didnt look sure of what to do. an example is "seventh wave". the song started and she went all red lights. in my head im saying. "its not red. its blue!!" ocean machine is blue! lol. i was so tempted to tell her to change the colour.
so you hope to be back in the next couple of years?
the devin townsend experience!!! GOLD GOLD GOLD!!
to hear some of your mellower more journey stuff would be a dream for me.

funeral, deep peace, mountain, triumph, gaia, pixillate, judgement, a simple lullaby, coast, heaven send. those are some of my fave tracks of any artist ever. to see some of these live would be a total blowout.

i got to say though. it was a privelage to see my fave artist of all time strut his stuff on stage.

Cool!

It looks like we're going to do something REALLY special in Australia next year (as of last night!)

I will learn as many of the songs you request as we can.

Have to play lots of Ziltoid here to get ready for Finland, so it's not amateur hour... will not play Z stuff on the 2nd day of Tuska.

Synchestra isn't represented because I could open the files (I did the album on PC, and have been mac now for years...)

I promise we'll catch up on the older stuff, and man...I truly want less heavy in the future as well...

This tour, the crew is trying their best to figure out what the hell to do with me...thanks for everything.

My ears are fucked right now...

I'm so paranoid about my hearing. How do you deal with it with all the live shows Dev? I assume you wear hearing protection, but do those in ear monitors really work as well as plugs? I've always wondered that. To be a musician do you have to be resigned to fucking your ears up?

You kids today and your "The music is too loud!"

It's supposed to be frickin' loud, man! If your ears aren't ringing for 3 days then something went wrong.

Just my personal opinion, of course. Take it from a half-deaf 39 year-old

Dev, this would be one of those times where I'd actually be GLAD if New Zealand gets lumped into the 'Australia' category...

*is hopeful*

He wears ear plugs on the live DVD that comes with "The Chaos Years." At least at Download.

I'm not sure if the in-ear monitors function as earplugs or not, but...if they are the same as in-ear phones, they probably have an ear plug effect. If you've ever used in-ear phones, they block out external sounds very well. I use in-ear phones at night when I go to sleep, and before I turn the music on, I really can't hear any noise at all...and I have fans running, or the TV might be on, etc.

I saw that he had earplugs in at Download. I wonder if there's a difference between the monitors and earplugs. I assume with in ear monitors you can hear whats going on better? I really have no clue about that sort of thing.

they're like noise cancelling headphones that block out/reduce outside noise while providing click tracks and the other instruments instead of having to use stage monitors. i guess it makes for better separation. some are even a latex mould of your ear so there's a perfect seal.

lol. im only 3 yrs younger than you.

personally im not a mosher. i always try to get a good spot near the back and watch the performance and groove in my spot.
imo dev's music is better suited to be a little less on the loud scale. because its so layered and deep.
its not just straight out heavy 3 piece band guitar bass drums stuff that can be blared max volume. there is so much going on his music, so many nuances that can only be discovered if the soundscape is clear, not distorted.

man im so excited for the next show. now that the man himself mentioned next year!! his mellower journey stuff. FUCK YEAH!!

dev if you could please please incorporate "funeral" into the list.... no song ive heard gets to me like that masterpiece.

actually I thought the sound on friday night was pretty clean, just *loud*. but that could be my earplugs attenuating out some high end distortion. It did get a bit congested during some of the more sonically busy ziltoid tracks, but thats about it.

the sound system at the tivoli seems to be pretty decent, I've seen a bunch of gigs there and all have sounded really rather great, its a nice venue too. I just feel sorry for the nearby apartments ;)
