So I went to class this morning and I looked outside and said, there's no way it's going to rain today.

This of course was a lie.

I came back soaked, and threw on my trusty "DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT" beanie, and when it came off, this was the magic result:

What's funny is that I used to do this kinda shit to my hair on purpose in 11th grade.

Noooo! beards are awesome. My high school always allowed beards. Isn't Gene lovely. He gabbed to me for a couple of hours before a gig, once.

My dad's the Director of Students at my school, and he makes up the rules about dress and hair. That's private education for ya.

I do not get the whole hair rules in school. Like, it's fucking school, not the god damn army. That's the period of your life where you should just be allowed do whatever the hell you want with how you look.

I always really appreciated it in my school that my principal, a exceptional disciplinarian in nearly every way, was cool with us looking how we wanted to look. I fla'd it, fucking wearing New Rocks and runners, didn't own a school jumper, wore baggy uniform trousers, tie all ripped, shirt never tucked and always too big with another t-shirt sticking out from beneath. Not to mention the mane of hair, that ended up for the last two years being an undercut mane of hair. And even though I could see him eyeballing me whenever I went by with that "eejit's gone mad with a razor" look on his face, he'd never say a thing cos he just accepted that's the age you're allowed look as sharp as a tack or one of the biggest tools walking the earth, depending on yourself...

Woooooo rant.

I agree 100%.

I remember once my head master saying, (Pretty much right at the end of school.):

Now, whilst I appricate your desire to be different, there are times you kinda have to conform as well. And well, the pink hair just isn't conforminng enough to everyone else. I'd like it if you could take this hint.

Did I dye it out? Nope. :D During my school times I had blue, turquoise, pink, purple, red going intno orange going into blonde, Blonde going into pink into purple too. :D

Infact, my year 11 leaving picture I have pink and blonde hair. :P

I disagree on almost every point there, leechy.

Of course when I went to school we used to get caned for being caught with the top button of our shirt unbuttoned - if you were outside of school even worse because was damagaing the reputation of the school... yeah really.

But to an extent being in school is a bit like being in the army - one of the purposes of organised schooling is to learn a degree of discipline, of conforming to rules, however fucking stupid you may personally find them, etc. I completely failed to do this while I was at school and now feel that was probably to my detriment.

Either a school has a uniform and a dress code, in which case it should be adhered to, or it allows kids to dress how they want and has no uniform at all. Anything between the two points is a nonsense.

As for that being the period of your life when you are allowed to do whatever you want with how you look - no, that's the rest of your life. Since I left school I have looked however the fuck I wanted all the time, and there isn't any 'allow' about it.

I feel far more restriction being out of school and college than I did in it. Most places wouldn't dare hire me if I have pink hair. But anywho, I'll be quiet, cause I'm feeling shitty and annoyed, so I won't bring up anything useful. :(

Amber, isn't the answer to that to choose a profession where your appearance isn't an issue?

As you are feeling itchy and scratchy I won't badger you, but wish you good things for a better mood. Have a nice cup of tea and some biscuits. That usually works for me.

There are less of the professions than one would hope...

We had a similar thing (minus the caning - we just got suspension) in our last year in school when our Principal banned all jumpers that were not the school jumper because "Hoodies and jackets appear threatening to the general public and therefore reflect badly on the quality of the school". So you couldn't wear a hoody or anything going into school. I once was threatened with expulsion for wearing a protective jacket on a daily basis on the motorbike. I mean for fuck sake, it wasn't hurting anyone to wear a bloody hoody or a jacket of their own if they wanted to be warm/dry. The school ones were a bloody flimsy, overly-expensive joke. Fuck that in -5 and pouring rain.

Yeah but then you've got that whole argument that learning about obeying rules goes hand-in-hand with learning how to break the same rules... Plus, sure you can have rules enforced in primary and secondary level education, but as soon as you get to college they all go waaaaaaaaay out the window. So then you just end up with people sailing through the disciplined levels as they intend to continue in the undisciplined level once they get out.

That whole uniformity promotes equality stuff, like, nobody cared. We knew who had money and who didn't. Making us all dress the same wasn't gonna stop there being disputes over being able to afford higher quality brands or whatever. I agree with you that it was completely ludicrous. We went around all day, every day with t-shirts hanging out, people'd be wearing tracksuits and runners and stuff. They may as well have made it non-uniform but NO. Then we'd know who the poor people are and we'd cast them out in spite of us all being mates.

I failed at paying attention to a lot of the rules as well, but it didn't adversely affect me. Or at least it hasn't yet, and I don't see where it will make me come a cropper some day. I know when to cop on and act accordingly because I have a shred of common sense. Surely everyone does, or it wouldn't be so common.

And I definitely don't feel like it's the rest of your life that you're able to look how you want, for the most part. I've been declined employment due to my physical appearance (or hair, specifically), and so have several of my other friends. Be it too short, too long, too dyed, too gelled, whatever. I think I've heard nearly every possible "No, you can't have a job because __________ is wrong with your hair and that will upset the clientele." That's just now as well. Most of us will presumably fall into employment in later life that also requires a certain look to be maintained. There was always that general consensus floating around that school was the time to do the crazy shit, cos once you hit 20/21 and get out of college, you better straighten up, dress nice and trim that shit back if you wanna go somewhere in the career that you've wanted and studied for for however many years.

My hair looked like this in school (well, not the one on the right...)

Image

Teachers didn't care. The kids with the normal looking hair were the ones setting fire to their exercise books and throwing their football boots at windows, the ones with the weird hair were too nerdy and shy.
