(will edit this post when I have something to add here... Cover is just a sketch. I am going to re-record it)

I’ve always been a big fan of Devin Townsend’s work, and Storm (From the album Accelerated Evolution) is no exception. Covering a Devy track is no easy job, there is absolutly no point in doing a straight cover, as the original is as near to perfect as it will ever be. No, so I wanted to pay tribute by looking at this song from a slightly different angle. There is a certain irony to an acoustic and gentle cover of storm which is not lost on me. But I really found the lyrics to this particular song quite relevant to my own personal life situations right now. So here is version 1 of this cover. This particular recording is meant as a sketch, for me to later re-visit and develop some more. As it stands right now, its just two guitars, one is finger picking harmonics on the 12th fret (which I used for keeping time), and the other is finger picking the song chords.
I actually cheated with the guitars, as I didnt know how many times it needed to go round. So i recorded them once, edited, and looped. Heheh! ;) The vocals were done ultra falestto because my parents were asleep, so I couldnt do them properly without waking them up. Whilst they are a bit flat in places (falsetto isnt my forté), there is a certain fragility to them which I do like. Perhaps when I have another go at paying tribute to this song, I’ll get them down better. As it stands now, there is 4 vocal tracks. 2 of each octave hard panned to each side.

Anyway… have a listen to this, then go listen to the Devin Townsend Band version, and see how it is MEANT to be done! ;)

Peace!

Planned for next version :

Complete re-recording of guitars and vocals.
Vocal harmonies (I don't have Dev's vocal range, so I will add subtle harmonies instead.)
Some guitar orchastration - will add some extra parts where needed...
maybe i can figure out how to acoustic-ize the "Time, time it's only time" bit, which I havmt done here....

wow... A! like amazing

It sounds different because of accoustic guitar, quiet vocals etc. but it makes it very original + you can still say whose/what exactly song is >:D

indeed! there is a hidden reason why i made it a real quiet version - i cant sing like devin hahah! If i tried to replicate the powerful vocals he does int eh last chorus, id absolutely murder my microphone...

cheers though, watch this page, ill make a note when I have updated / developed it more...

Oh well, it gives the song a new dimension in itself anyway. so far I think your going good here, I wanna see more people doing this actually, like that guy who did solar winds acoustic cover. Kinda like Dev turning Quiet Riot's Cum On Feel The Noise into the Ki style. Nothing's impossible there, unless maybe turning van halen eruption into soft acoustic style haha.

So there might be limits but yea, thats my take on stuff like this.
I'm pondering over a traveller acoustic cover actually. I might change the bridge though; don't think that sound great on acoustic.

Acoustic guitars all the way man :P

Thanks guys :)

Yeah i agree with you, some parts of an original song just dont translate to acoustic very well - for example, theres a section in Storm which i purposfully left out. Its not that I dont like it (I do!) or that I cant play it (I can) but it just doesnt work very well, and disrupts the flow of this intimate and fragile version.

oh, and youre probably very right about eruption by van halen! hahah! Id love to see someone have a go at this... Dev? heheh

A couple of other songs I acoustic-ified was Carcass' Childs Play (from Swan Song) although I havnt recorded it yet, and Megadeth's Addicted to Chaos (I did record this, but it was a long time ago on very bad equipment, so it sounds pants).

I love doing covers actually, but most of the time, I can never do proper justice to the original. That is most probably because the original versions were so poerfect in teh first place. Like I said before, there is no point doing a straight cover for most songs, because they are already amazing. And if they wern't, then why would you even notice them in the first place? hehehe!

To have a listen (and laugh) here are some of my (very old) covers... None of which are any good at all...
