I ended up downloading ME2 just to screw with a friend of mine who's far more excited about it than I before it came out.

I see it's more of a shooter now. Color me disappointed.

It's (ME2) apparently arrived into the warehouse at my work...I'm on holiday at the moment and still on holiday on the release date so I miss out on the joy of packing and shipping hundreds of orders. /sarcasm.

I get pwned in Feb though with Bioshock 2, Aliens vs Predator, Star Wars Online...among other things. Blarg, workin' with games can really put you off 'em. ...Sometimes. 8)

I may finally get my hands on a copy of Shadow of the Colossus this week... I've kicked myself since its release that I never got it. Fingers crossed anyway.

Oh just you wait. There are times when you're only going to go around talking. For like 40 minutes. They've also thrown a bit of Spore in with the planet scanning. I am loving everything. Especially upgrading weapons and getting prototypes, but the beautiful graphic hurts my eyes and I need to take breaks with MW2. :(

Such a great game. Definitely provides the player with an experience more than just entertainment.

The combat kills it for me. I know I'm in the VAST minority, but sometimes I'd like to play a game without a fucking third person cover system

Too bad the story is good, the shooting mechanic is smooth and solid and the setting/characters are compelling. Such bad things for game to have...

Don't doubt it, and I'll tough it out since I loved the first Mass Effect's story and I love Bioware (I'm in love with Dragon Age and that combat is clunky as shit in comparison), I'd just like someone to do Sci-Fi in a different way. Besides, I said I was in the vast minority, so I'm sorry my opinion doesn't align with the status quo chief.

I just dont see what the real complaint is here other than you have some dislike of 3rd person shooters with cover systems like they are pumped out every other week. Notice how not many first person shooters have cover systems in first person, the perspective doesnt really allow for accessibility, no matter how realistic it might be. Killzone 2 managed a kind of "FPS Cover system" that worked decently. I think I'm getting tired of the "lets see how real we can make a game" logic that's been going around. I miss the old days where shooters involved you fighting massive hordes of enemies with guns that fired small nuclear warheads. I miss when a game could do the most outrageous shit and get away with it without actually being called "unrealistic"

But all in all, please do elaborate on the "do sci-fi in a different way" thing. I'd love to hear your ideas on how they can make it better.

While I'm not purporting to have all of the answers, and trust me I'm no fan of the FPS at all at this point, I'm sick of shooters being the only triple A titles anymore. Just fatigued of it.

As far as differentials for how the science-fiction based game is played, honestly as mediocre as Too Human was, it certainly was attempting to try something different with the genre. I'm just tired of people playing it safe all the time in the games industry, and that definitely includes my employer as well.

It's not like I didn't love Mass Effect.I love the galaxy that was created, I mean my favorite thing across all media are well-fleshed out, fully conceptualized worlds/universe. I will use the storyline to push me through the game, but I'm reaching wits end on space based future shooters when it comes to gameplay. In my eyes, the shooter has kinda reached that critical maximum platformers had 15 years ago. It's not like Klonoa wasn't amazing back in the day, but something that brought something more to the table like Tomba is more revered in my memory. If that analogy makes any sense to you...

I definitely know where you're coming from. I enjoy me a good FPS every so often, and I'll get together with some friends and we'll system link some Xboxes together and play Halo 2 until the wee hours of the morning. But it seems like the blockbuster go-to games that come out anymore are the war-based FPS's (or the ones that receive the most attention) and they're flooding the market. Ever since Goldeneye or the first Halo, companies have been trying to put out the next "Goldeneye/Halo-killer" because they know thats what most competitive and social gamers go after. Those single player platformers such as Klonoa or Tomba (I freaking loved both those games) don't have the same attraction in today's market due to their lack of content that could provide the player with bragging rights (online play, trophies, rankings, etc). I too am waiting for the next big platformer that shakes up the genre (that isn't a Mario title), but aside from maybe Braid or the Uncharted series (which has its platforming moments) nothing from recent memory comes to mind. Maybe I just haven't been paying enough attention...

LOVE Tomba. o-o

And aye, I see where you're coming from. The phenomnom of over-the-shoulder-chest-high-wall-hiding games is starting to get to me a bit. Okay, yes, using cover s more realstic. But in sci-fi, explain that problem away! "Don't I need to use cover?" "HELL NO! You're a super solider from a giant science company! We have shields and shit! Get going!"
