My hip-hop knowledge is severely lacking so I hope to get some good recommendations here.
I find most of the mainstream shit to be just that, shit. Its so boring.

Some of the stuff I do like:
Saul Williams
Dalek
Jurassic 5
Outkast

I like the old school sound like J5 and the noisier stuff like Dalek. I find Outkast to just write great songs, nothing is off bounds with those guys.

Well without your thread we probably never would've made it. So it's all down to you, boyo. Just for the love of god don't be so opinionated that you review it. We all know where that ends. :P

'Nother one for the lyrical mixtures of this thread, Antipop Consortium have their fair share of catchy tunes, though they can be hit and miss...

Someone highly recommended me Mos Def's The Ecstatic a few days ago, so I need to look into that soon as well.

Mos Def is one of the best freestylers I've heard. I gotta check some more of his stuff too.

Can we all just agree that the only problem with hip hop is the mainstream stuff from the last ten years?

And everything else is fine to awesome?

its been like it for a while. Chuck D mentions alot about it on Muse Sick N-Hour Message

its a problem with all genres though. they become popular and record companies latch on and make them marketable

Heh.

I just compare 50 Cent to Winger.

Which is the funniest comparison ever.

A most underappreciated album.

Chuck also happens to be one of the all-time great rappers... n shit.

Saul Williams is great, other acts I like:

Kool Keith
NWA
Ice T
Doseone (okay, most of the anticon related stuff)
Dalek

There's more, those are just the ones that jump out at me right away.

Uh, what? How much of hip-hop do you actually know about, just out of curiosity? Just cause it's a different genre, doesn't mean it's stupid. It all depends on what you say and do, not what genre of music you create. Just my opinion, of course.

And I've been enjoying Lupe Fiasco a bit lately. 8)
