The place to speak about Dev's current projects, and everything yet to come

I thought there should be a thread discussing the vocal work of this lovely lady.

Personally for me, she grew on me quite well. I'm always skeptical about female vocals, because they always sound like someone else. A lot of goth vocals end up just sounding like Amy Lee, etc. But I recall Dev mentioning that he could "make a female voice sound perfect", so I figured that he was interested in directing and recording a female vocalist, after working with so many dudes all the while. And sure enough, Dev captured Anneke well and her performance on Addicted has this sort-of ethereal quality (especially in Numbered). It sort of makes me wonder, what if he collaborated with her since the beginning? What if Ocean Machine or Infinity had these angelic vocals on it? Especially Infinity, too. I mean, Truth just sounds like the sky opening up and shitting on your face, imagine Anneke rounding out the voices in Dynamics, Unity, hell ANY of them.

Thoughts?

It's hard for me to be unbiased about her. I saw The Gathering four times live and have (counts) 26 of their CD's so you might say I've been a bit of a fan. Her solo stuff since she left them is still good but not a patch on that stuff or this with Dev. Live especially her voice is simply outstanding and she can send shivers down your back very easily. She's also damn gorgeous which very much helps the equation. One of my top gig moments was The Gathering doing "Black Light District" and hitting the massive guitar grind-off in the middle - she was quite, quite incredible on that front too.

If anybody wants to pick up on other stuff with her then go for The Gathering's "Mandylion" and "How To Measure A Planet" (the double cd if you can) and that'll give you plenty to please your ears.

Yeah, she's awesome and her voice is seducing me, since Mandylion and Nighttime Birds.

She's like a siren when she's singing. Very cool lady and happy mom, too.

Would love to hear her more on performing other Dev's songs.

I think her voice works better on mellower music than heavy stuff. And I hate her Dutch accent.

I think her voice is shit, I haven't been keen on her work although I've listened to a great deal of it. From what I heard in the "live" recording sessions that Dev posted, she sounded very whiney, out of tune and not exceptionally talented. That said, I'm not a professional recording artist so I hardly have an entitlement to pass comment about the technicalities of it. From my thoroughly subjective standpoint I refuse to accept that she's as good as it gets. I also think that there's a chance she could fuck up the album, but Dev will almost certainly remaster it to the end that the finished product will sound great. I'm sure he had a reason beyond being a fan for deciding to choose her as his accompanist, her voice must compliment his or something. Even having listened to her as a standalone, I don't see how it could.

She's my favorite singer and one of the best live singers I have ever heard. Love her work with The Gathering, her solo material, and the guest spots she's been doing on various other albums. I think her voice is better now than during the Mandylion/Nighttime Birds era.

What the fuck?

Weird to read shit like that while listening to Addicted. :/

But oh well, you haven't heard it yet.

I don't really like her voice, she was horrible on Ayreon, but I respect her abilities.

Does that mean you have listened to every female singer in the world to make sure? Respect, dude! That's some dedicated research.

Wolves fan of some 30+ years. Currently wearing Wolfie slippers - that's how I roll.

Aaaaaanyway.....

As to Anneke's voice I think there's two sides to this thread - what people think of her voice generally on other material and how people feel it works on Addicted. Personally both are a resounding love for me but it's quite possible the answers may differ for some folks....
