Makes me want a baritone guitar of my own...

how does it feel to play compared to a normal scale guitar?

Should be stick'd somewhere (as "Devin's stance on leaks and downloading" or something) to avoid that redundant download discussions every time. I think they're explaining everything pretty extensively. Just an idea.

I agree, tl;dr, it's simple:

1. If you are going to download, at least wait until the actual street date
2. If you enjoy it, buy it, or at least buy some merch.

That's always been the kind of system I've worked on personally.

You meet good folks through your time and you meet people just the opposite.

You see good actions and mean ones, often on the receiving end of either.

All you can do is say "So be it" and learn from the bad while enjoying the good. I'm 41 and have really only come to this mindset over the last couple of years. It's surprising how much better each day is from there. Like you say, Dev, why waste energy on something only there to sap it from you? If the sun is hidden behind a cloud then it still exists - you just have to wait for the cloud to move a little. Things pass.

As a friend of mine used to say:-

"Good will? Yeah, the good will."

I'm only 19, yet have a similar outlook on things. Wonder what that says about me...

Whew, this is a long post.

DOWNLOADING: Not to beat this horse to death, but besides being illegal, downloading is just plain wrong. It's totally screws the artist and makes it more difficult for them to continue making music. If I spent 6000 hours of my life into a project, shouldn't I be offended when people can enjoy the fruits of my labor for nothing? How would you feel if you went into work and your employer decided that what you did all day was not worth paying you for? Well you would probably not want to work there. Like most other fans of Devin's music, I would love to hear the product sooner than later but I am glad to say that I have always paid to possess and listen to it ad infinitum and I hope that his continued success will allow him to continue making the music. I don't wear t-shirts because they don't go well with a tie and slacks, but if I did I would buy one just to ensure that he can be able to keep doing this.

As to the legal point, as a lawyer I know that there are many of us who will end up having to defend some of you for your actions. Don't be fooled into thinking that you are anonymous in cyber space. You can be found if someone is looking hard enough. That is a fact.

HEY EVERYONE, I'M A MUSICIAN, PEOPLE ARE STEALING FROM ME BY DOWNLOADING ALL MY HARD WORK!!!!!!!!

Guess what folks? There are 2 sides to every story. Art is subjective and absolutely superfluous. It in no way hinders the progress of the species. I can't stand my job but I do it because $$ is a necessary evil. So if you want to bitch for not being paid for art, get a real fucing job and live like the rest of us.

Downloading will eventually weed out the shittiest of the shit. It's bound to happen. It's stopped me from automatically purchasing all of the Arch Enemy albums past "Wages of Sin". It's also going to kill a dinosaur industry that has been taking advantage of artists and consumers since inception. I have 1000's of CD's. I feel absolutely no remorse for downloading an album and not giving $$ to a record company. Why you ask? Because my music collection, which I don't even want to consider what I've paid for, is going to rot and is already worthless. CD's are garbage and a buch of assholes got bonuses and retired by selling us garbage.

Conversely, through downloading, I have found some artists that are turning out to be some of my favourites. I would never have spent $30 picking up a Blotted Science album. Mostly because I had to rely on the internet to find it. I never saw it in a store and would have never known to look for it had it not had a glowing recommendation on a *shudder* torrent site. I have found more music that I enjoy by sampling it first and finding the artist directly through the web. Usually this ends up in me buying a shirt or going to a show and buying a poster or something.

Artists are now getting pissed because they can get called on their crap without people having to spend money to find out it's crap. It doesn't matter who the artist is, my personal view is, if you make a shit album, I ain't gonna buy it just because your name is on it. It doesn't mean I'm gonna be a dick and tell someone to their face or on a forum that their new album sucks but I don't have to waste $20, that ultimately goes to the record company anyways, to find out.

None of this has anything to do with Dev or the poster I quoted. I have downloaded every Dev/SYL/DTB/DTP album that has been released since I've had the internet. I have also purchased multiple copies of every single one of them because Dev has not (IMO) put out a shitty album. Along with that, I have SYL shirts, hoodies, golf shirts, etc. etc. I'm just so fucking sick of hearing people whine because they are not getting paid handsomly for doing something that in reality is their own choice to do. I respect Dev's position on the matter and especially his candour. However, some people that can't do arpegiatted sweeps with their eyes closed have to work at WalMart or in a factory just to survive.

$30 for Blotted Science's album? Can't you just get it from Ron's site directly?

I love that album. The last two tracks are my favorite, the second one being the reverse of the first. Andenosine Buildup and Andenosine Breakdown I think are the names of those tracks. Now I have to listen to it.

Just to get on the download bandwagon and to play the devils advocate...

Although screwing artists, there is a positive. Way back when, Napster was awesome, I downloaded stuff from this band called Strapping Young Lad, I'd heard them mentioned and I thought the name was funny, the first track I heard was Underneath the waves.

Since then I've bought most of Devin's albums (the ones I've gotten my hands on that is), I pre ordered Ki and will do the same with Addicted.

It's a nice way to discover artists, when you discover music you really like you then have motivation to get the whole package, the artwork and the proper audio quality.

There, I took my turn in the savage beating of this dead horse :p

I just really need a new Devin song, especially right now. You know when you are at one of those crossroads in life and you just need a new song from your favorite artist to associate with that time in your life? Hard to explain really...

But I would wait for my physical copy and not download it if Dev posted just one of the songs off the album to tide us over. I just need something haha
