but what PISSES me off (more than being against it) is when somebody is cruel enough to post it 2 or three months in advance. That's just a dick maneuver, downloading aside.

But the labels do this big promo deal, that ultimately I pay for, and the setup for an album is 3 months. Point blank. It's just a slap in the face to everybody who puts effort in, me aside, the promo folks, the artists, the websites, the streetteams etc...what kind of gets people interested...MONEY aside, is that 'hype', so to have the cat let out of the bag months in advance is an asshole thing to do, regardless of how you or I see downloading.

So look, it's gonna leak...some countries insist on physical copies if for promo if they're going to stock it, and a leak 10 , 15 days before a release is normal, and in most cases, it helps that hype. (if the record doesn't totally blow) so go man, if you're interested at that point, fire it up. Please buy a shirt.

I just get into the whole setup of it, so it's just cruel when people blow the surprise. No biggie. I'm not going to publish a list of names, 10 or 15 days before, yeah you know...I'd love to hear what you think...thats cool. But if it's months in advance, by the time the record is released, it's yesterdays news, and the big old chunk of money we put out for ads and shit on sites and in rags just kind of seems ridiculous.

So it's not the downloaders I get bummed at, it's someone who pulls a dink move months in advance.

do you know who it was who leaked ki?

Yea, I would have to agree. All the ad's and shit are ridiculous if the albums already been leaked for 2 months.
Good insight Dev.

There was actually a local band here who had their album leaked by the studio they recorded at. it was like 3 months from the CD release party. Luckily they were good enough and had the local scene following them pretty well, so their CD release party was pretty damn good.

Unfortunately, it's kind of like Full Metal Alchemist, if you've ever watched that show. You gotta give something of equal or greater value to get something out of that. Basically they would transmute stuff like wood into metal. But it had to be equal value.

So what I'm saying is, technology has made it easier and possible for you, me, william hung, and anyone else who wants to, to make music. But unfortunately technology has taken our privacy. It's made it easier to steal and get things when you shouldn't have them.

I'm just glad we don't have to record on analog devices anymore, especially with the internet nowadays. Taking forever for the album to get recorded, mixed, mastered, edited etc, and then having it leaked out on the internet.

Life is like a demon who has a give and take relationship with everyone. I guess just keep with the ride, and put your seat belt on when it gets rough?

Humanity depresses me sometimes because we're all doing this to ourselves and going in a very bad direction. I can't tell anymore if people see where we are going or not :(

Since there was a subject change since I was typing this, here is a distraction so people skip this post.

you have good points, but it can never be stopped. unfortunately. But long live the Dev

As for full metal alchemist, that show was awesome, and the remakes are even better.

Ah man, life's what we make of it, no?

Theres a choice to be made by everybody... strive to be happy. In the long run, all these things are just things. Hold on to the one or two bright spots a month.

Buried my grandfather in the rain yesterday, but made up with estranged relatives. Good with the bad.

I would've transmigrated to another dimension years ago, but y'know...walmart had a sale of juicy gummies, so...

Some cultures see 'that' day as a special gift.
Apparently your death day in numerology is as significant as your birth day.

Love the pics , Still giggling

You meet good folks through your time and you meet people just the opposite.

You see good actions and mean ones, often on the receiving end of either.

All you can do is say "So be it" and learn from the bad while enjoying the good. I'm 41 and have really only come to this mindset over the last couple of years. It's surprising how much better each day is from there. Like you say, Dev, why waste energy on something only there to sap it from you? If the sun is hidden behind a cloud then it still exists - you just have to wait for the cloud to move a little. Things pass.

As a friend of mine used to say:-

"Good will? Yeah, the good will."

My Grandad died a few days before yours Dev. I can't get back to England (from America) for the funeral, so I recorded an acoustic song on a 12 string that will be played on CD at the wake - tuned to open b of course ;)

You should write a song about your Gramps in the style of your fourth record.

I think these two posts:

viewtopic.php?f=49&t=7976&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=2145#p212264

Should be stick'd somewhere (as "Devin's stance on leaks and downloading" or something) to avoid that redundant download discussions every time. I think they're explaining everything pretty extensively. Just an idea.

I've never been one for downloading/"stealing" music, and especially not yours Dev. As you said some time ago about the same thing; bands like U2 or Metallica can afford to have their music downloaded but 'smaller' musicians (no offense of course, I've spent more time listening to your music and your interviews than pretty much any other artist over the last two years) deserve a break from it. I think in all my collection of your music there's about three songs that I've not paid for, and they came directly from the old HevyDevy site as free samples, (SITM, Devlab 10, Life) and since then I've bought Christeen +4 anyway, along with Infinity, from your eBay shop. (I already had Infinity as a paid-for mp3 download from an online shop in the UK (I know that's still downloading but the site (play.com) specifically states they pay for the rights to sell it as an mp3 download, and they never 'leak' albums) but wanted it in CD format as well) I just find it insulting to have someone such as yourself put so much time and effort into an album, then have someone just go "Hurr durr imma download it foar free".

Anyway, speech over. Hope everything's going well.

I confess, I've been one cheap motherfucker that downloads every song I have without paying (and I'm talking about 105GB). Why? Well, besides being a cheap motherfucker I don't make my own money yet and my parents are paying for my college, so I never felt too bad for downloading. But this week it all changed. Oh yeah. I got my heart broken and rather to go all emo and listen to Linkin Park I turned to City to unleash my anger (successfuly). Then I went to a music festival with some friends. It was awesome, but luckily I got H1N1 virus there. Oh god. So now I basically feel like shit, I'm broken heart (well, life goes on), my body and my head hurt like fucking hell, I can barely breathe properly (yeah, I have chronic asthma too) and I can't get off the bed. And what cheers me up while I'm in pain lying in my bed watching the rain through the window? Listening to Ocean Machine, Synchestra, Terria and Ki.

My point being? There's no other artist that makes feel so comfortable and connected to his music and his lyrics. So you deserve it all, Dev. Lesson learned. Once I can get up on my feet I'm going to set up a paypal account and get most of your catalog. Thank you man, it's been a hard time around here.
