Haha, I'm sorry.

As long as they're not telling you that face-to-face... I hope you realize they're metaphors for saying "that is super-special-awesome". :P

As for worshipping you, nah. But I do have a fuckton of respect for what you have done and are doing now. And that's not just about the music you created either. Anyone who manages to throw their old unhealthy lifestyle overboard and adopt a new one gets my respect. Having witnessed this first-hand from a brother overcoming a self-destructive drug addiction I've experienced how hard it can be.

As far as the rest of your rant....No offense, but I am glad you go through all this shit first, so I don't have to.

Nah Dev, for one, I don't think it's that a lot of people worship you as a God, it's just you really make good music. What you're experiencing is called common sense, but at the same time it's called modesty.
Personally, (and I know you'll hate this) I think you're the greatest musician to ever walk...to my knowledge. Everyone's so one-dimensional nowadays, and even the people who say that the greats were the best (like Elvis, Elton John, Roger Waters, Ozzy Osbourne,) they're all just so one-dimensional with their music. Just because they know the difference between a slow song and a fast one doesn't make them good at music.
I say it to people all the time and it's true that it is extremely refreshing to see a musician who is not afraid to go wherever the hell he wants with his music. You've tackled more forms of music than most artists even daydream about doing. I thought Devlab was a massive failure if you were trying to go for ambience, but if it's what you like, then go for it.
As for Addicted, one of the people you're referring to with the "greatest album ever" is me. Sorry, but it's true. It sounds extremely good. Nibz, Addicted, the two that got pulled from YouTube, Unverse, it all sounds great. It's different. It's the same. Reminds me of a lighter Physicist right now. Reminds me of nothing I've ever heard.
Needless to say, it's gonna be a great album. Hopefully, better than Devlab. Rant over. :P

As the Ancient Greek aphorism says - "Know thyself"

A lot of people (the lucky ones) go through a phase in life where they take a long, hard, sober, honest look at themselves and the world around them. The person who emerges is usually a much healthier person. Dev is going through that stage right now by the sounds of it. Only good can come of it, IMO.

What a great topic!! I always wanted to say something about this.
When I was like 17/18 years old Devin was really like a big thing for me cause there was finally someone who said the things that I where thinking about and sometimes he confirmed some things for me so I could move on.
Now I'm 22 year's old and I still look up to you in a way euuuuuh.....
I can relate so good with your music and your way of life and your philosophy (not everything but very much) but it's not like I think your some kind of god, it's more like a person who I can relate to, just like I have good friends where I can talk about everything and shit.
I know your just a human being who shit and eats the same thing as me, nah I like coffee more but you know what I mean, but I must say, if I meet your someday I would be as nervous as a little child and I think that's normal cause you really had a big influence on me in times that I needed good influence and therefore I respect you in a strange way.
So that's my shit and now I have a question.

The fact that you are so open an the internet brings people with positive comments but also negative comments, I did noticed that your not really good with the negative responses on you personal live and shit and about your music. So my question is, WHY?!?!?!!?!?!?
It's so cool that you tell us all the things your doing and all the things that keeps you busy, but don't you think that sometimes you better not tell curtain kind of information because when you get critic about it you sometimes really flip out and that's unnecessary cause people can't have critic about things that are not ready or done yet.
I think its better to do 1 post a week with an update with pure facts about your progress with the music NOT with feelings, you have to keep your feelings away from your posts about your music out here cause the internet doesn't get feelings and words don't get feelings to. The consequences of that is that everyone things different about the things you say and then you must explain again and again and again by what you mean and that's very frustrating and unnecessary. That's the way I think about that, what do you think?

But when you really want to discuss with us about curtain things then you really should do that, but not about your music when your still working on it cause that's you and you shouldn't allow critic about you cause we can't have critic about you cause you are you and we are we.

The reason I wanted to post this is because I react the same on critic on the way I see or the way I think about things, and when I'm busy with music and I ask for someones opinion during the progress itself I really lose confidence on it, and it doesn't matter if that was a good friend of a total stranger but it really does hit me when that happens.

I, of course, wasn't referring to you when I said some musicians don't appreciate what their music has meant to some. It says enough that you have this forum to even interact with us. I'm simply speaking about the majority, much as you discovered with your experience.

I've met plenty of extremely cool people whose music is huge to me. I think the coolest fucker I've met so far was Jeff Loomis.

I certainly have the same religious views, to some extent. I cannot believe in a higher power as much as I'd like to. The more I learn about our universe, the more the facts of science and the explanations of religion disagree. It's always someone's choice to believe what they will, but it's sad that some people never question their own beliefs and instead choose to accept them on blind faith.

You know, I'll admit it, I idolize Devin, but at the same time I idolize most artists in general. I guess the thing is that unlike most of the posters here, I've never actually had the chance to meet any artist who's work I'm a fan of. Hell I've never even been to a single real concert.

I know one or two people who make music, most of them are at the same level I am, as in can't even join a band, and the only one I know that doesn't have that problem is just a guy who makes songs for OCRemix.

I think I've just always wanted to actually sit down with an artist that actually has even a small amount of admirers who know them for their music alone, just to talk to them. Just to kind of see how this regular guy deals with that sort of thing, the process of going day to day, knowing that you've made something that people truly enjoy, that people genuinely respect, that's just something that I can only ever imagine. I guess that's why I absolutely love good interviews so much, I guess it gives me that level of insight I desire so much.

I always have all kinds of questions I'd love to ask, but if given the opportunity, I think I'd be afraid to in fear of coming across as annoying, or even worse, insulting, especially considering I feel that the things I want to ask are either too vague or too trivial. Maybe it's because I do see them as 'gods', but I really don't mean to. I know for a fact that they're ordinary guys, but I guess the fact that they're ordinary guys who've accomplished something extraordinary is what is so fascinating to me.

Cool thread. I can't believe that some people have actually moved near where Devin lives just to... live closer to him? What. The. Fuck?!

Interesting topic, I'm just saying 1 bit though: Devin, please don't exaggerate that remixing of Addicted. Like Bob Ross said, "it's easy to overdo!"

Aside from that, thumbs up for your honesty. that might help you a lot in eliminating that superhuman image. good thing!

Wow Dev,

This, to me, is really cool. I disagree with the OP, so I'm not let down in the slightest! When you're posting here, tweeting, or whatever, you're letting your fans connect to you in human form (Great Death song :D ). I think that is great. I agree that we need to realize that we are all just human beings.

Please stop saying you're old! You're my brother's age and my sister is 2 years older than he is. I'm not that far behind. If you're old, then I am middle-aged!

I think for the sake of entertainment, it's perfectly healthy to see someone as a "god" only because that is a character they create. I'm sure Rob Halford isn't always riding a morotcycle around wherever he goes, and as an actual person he's probably totally different guy on stage, but we enjoy watching the "Metal God" on stage in all his metal splendor cause it's part of an act.

Even bands like Venom and Slayer. Tom Araya apparently is a very devout Catholic. Like Grotus said: That's Entertainment.

A fabricated image is a good thing sometimes cause it creates a character for entertainment purposes, and heaven knows we enjoy being entertained.

It is also good to know the artist, Dev is one of the better scenarios to know the artist, his goal isn't to be over the top with flair and imagery. His is to make great music.

That was a great read Dev. I just want you to know that I make you my hero because of your modesty and your view on artistic outlets. I have always had a problem with artists (all kinds, not just musicians) who are pretentious about their work. I like to draw and make movies, and I try to be as modest and honest as I can about what I draw or film because it's for me, and the more I listen to your music and the information you share about yourself on these forums, I do feel like I have that in common with you. At the very least I look up to you and try and... well I don't want to say "model myself" after you, but I do think you have the right idea about being honest with yourself when it comes to creating art. I'm getting a DTP tattoo to always remind me of that. Thank you for everything :D

The only way someone could find out so much about Dev is by coming here and reading his posts. In other words, we have to go out of our way to learn these things; it's not like he's forcing this on his listeners or anything. I'm sure there are tons of fans who don't even read the forums. For me, knowing more about him adds another layer to my enjoyment of his music. I do feel like I can relate to him as a person, at least from what I've read here. His philosophy seems similar to mine, a seeker on the path. We're also about the same age so maybe that's part of it.

I've had people MOVE to 'be near me', then when I didn't like it...or heaven forbid, was CREEPED THE FUCK OUT BY IT, it's like I 'let them down'.

Wow, I had no idea you had stalkers. It's flattering and scary at the same time I suppose. And here I am thinking it would be presumptuous of me to send you an email. :D

I'm sober, almost 40.

Hey, you're 37, I'm 38 - WE'RE NOT 40 JUST YET DAMMIT!!!

Sorry. I feel better now.
