Hi guys,

I record using adobe audition and it's nice and easy to use.

After I have recorded my various tracks I simply muck about with the volumes of each track then bundle them together as one wav file.

Is there something else I can use (in Audition) to make the song better?

I know it has clipping, compression but I'm a bit unsure what to do with the individual files to mix it...

Any help would be great.

Quick glance at adobe's site tells me that Audition can use VST and VSTi plugins. Which leads me to suspicion you can do a fuckton of cool things to your songs (or completely ruin them in creative manner).

Tho I'm guessing proper EQuing of each track (to make them work together best) belongs to most important things. Also I love teh delays and reverbs (they say some subtle reverb on master track helps a lot). Compression is indeed serious bussiness. Bussiness which I don't grasp properly unless I have some really simple plugin, like Betabugs Simple Squeeze (this one's operated with one knob) or TLs Saturated Driver.

Hog, there are a billion ways to go about the mixing process, but the only thing that matters is that it sounds alright to you. I would recommend bringing up an EQ for each track and just fiddle with it until it sounds good to you.

Even better, go on youtube and look up mixing in audition, you can find a lot of useful information on what methods other people have.

You're right, people are studying it for years, I think I've seen over 400 pages thick book on Reaper on amazon (I'll rather wait for a comic book version).

^^ If you're interested in mixing it's hard to not use some technical terms. It's good to have some basic idea about what compression, gating, limiting, mastering, etc is, since otherwise you're screwing around in a program without really knowing what's going on. I don't know Audition, but I'm sure there's some sort of help section that deals with several of these definitions and/or methods.

edit- Upon closer inspection it seems that Cool Edit Pro (what I and my bandmates use) has evolved into Audition. However I'm not in charge of all the mixing business, so I couldn't tell you which plugins we're using exactly, nor what has been updated from the old program we're using...

Honestly, a good portion of it lies in guitar tone as well. Having a heavy gain tone going in will give a bad sound overall, and if you compress any of it it makes it sound even worse. I learned this the hard way haha.

I dont use compression or anything, and I've got my tone down to where I really dont need to EQ it ever. I try to use as few effects and tricks as possible on my recordings. Work the levels, maybe some compression on the master track.

I just like to do everything as simple as possible, though I could definitely benefit from tips and a little more learning on the subject.
