It's annoying when you have only few measures of a song and it's already buried in your brain and you want to sing it. +10 to earworming skillz for Dev.

Every line I got from the vid:

And even if it takes a lifetime to learn
yeah I'll learn
I'll learn
we learn

I don't want to save my soul now
I don't want to lose control

And even if it takes a lifetime to learn
I'll learn

I don't want to save my soul now
I just want to lose control

(Not sure what he sings at the very end of the vid...)

Cool how the lines vary a bit from for example the "I don't want to lose control" to "I just want to lose control".

I've watched it too many times already :D

Apart from the fact that "Nibz" sounds amazing, I'm gobsmacked regarding how fast Dev works when tracking vox.

How long does it usually take?

longer :D
most singers i know don't always intonate right. they usually don't hit all the notes correctly, pronounce words wrong or forget words, and have to do numerous takes of every line. the engineer or producer then has to cut and repair a whole lot, building the final version of one verse out of snippets from many takes.
also, most vocal productions involve a special isolated room where the singer stands with headphones on, hearing the music and the producer's voice giving directions. devin just takes the mic into his hands and does it all by himself, which also accelerates the process.

...which leads me to this, although it has been asked before: how come you (devin) sing your vocals while blasting the mix full on through the room? doesn't all that sound mess up your vocal recording? i didn't get that.

Somebody on youtube wrote that this model of microphone has directional characteristic with "dead zone" where it doesn't pick much (it's called cardioid pattern, if I got it right, basically it records stuff mainly from the front of it). Maybe that's the case.

edit: thought the sound from the monitors reverbates around the room a bit, so should get recorded anyway. Yeah, it's a good question. And I have the another - is that kind of recording, like, recording only few lines of at one take typical? I'm guessing recording whole vocal line at once is a rarity today?

^ Interesting, I was wondering about that myself.

I really hope he keeps the name "Nibz." It's appealing for reasons I'm not sure of - just kind of off the wall. :D

You know, it depends on the type of music and vocals you want to have. Recording whole vocal line at once is possible and is done on situations where you don't need to have multiple layers I guess. You can usually hear it on the record when the vocals are done with one take.

He said it just sounded really loud because the camera was an inch away from the speaker. And add to that the (wat) very little bleeding or whatever mic.

I appreciate people are interested in the microphone, that's a given - I'm a gearhead and I goof off over different impedance mods to pickup's, all sorts. But over 2 pages all about a microphone, then flaming someone because they get the model wrong - I fail to see the full relevance to the OP topic. There's in fact a thread for gear chat.

Sennheiser, Shure, etc. are all fantastic makes. Dev uses one, that's a big sign of approval for the majority right there, especially from what we heard and saw - so I reiterate I'm just far more interested on whats going into addicted creatively, technique and emotionally, from dev and other fans reaction - so excuse my prudence.

As for kyl88... er what?

Yeah...yeah...yeah...let 'em talk, I like to hear. what's your problem with keeping your mouth shut?
You're just a mean Disruptr.

Maybe you don't want to read this and maybe you don't want to read that. Boohoo!
There's a whole lot more people than YOU! It's not your forum. what is your prerogative anyway?

Like you said, everyone has a method.
In my experience I'll do the main, or lead vocal as one track, granted there are no fuck-ups, then go back and punch in the back-ups one verse/chorus at a time.
I believe in that clip Dev is handling the back-up vocal layers.

Also, as for what Brunon said, cardioid patterns are pretty much the standard polar pattern for mics, cardioid is intended to capture mostly signal from straight on, but there are more directional mics out there. I believe the order is, from widest to narrowest polar pattern, cardioid, super cardioid, and hyper cardioid.

I'm trying really to go off of knowledge and not jump on wikipedia to make myself look smarter, so I may be wrong.

Man, 15 hour days again...fuck me...

three more weeks till I can chill a bit.

Started rehearsing, doing everything from the solo albums live, (a bit o Phys, Infinity, OM, AE, Synch, Ki, Ziltoid, Terria etc...)

under the touring name 'Devin Townsend'

Ryan, drums, Dave, guitar, Beav bass...backup stuff on tape, not a 'band' as much as a showcase.

Shows in 4 or 5 months start?
