It's a statistical probability that there's life on other planets... most people know this by now. We're not really likely to get hysterical about it anymore. I've not heard our government 'discounting' the probability of life elsewhere for a long time. However, I find the idea that our countries and indeed our world cannot operate without some 'higher beings,' be they aliens or gods, in charge is pretty insulting to human achievement thus far.

Sure, governments keep secrets - usually about which MPs have been shagging a floozy on the side or fiddling their expenses. And obviously they have to keep diplomatic and military stuff secret because it would be somewhat dumb not to do so. But that's just human nature, not a huge organised conspiracy. I think conspiracy theory often equals religion in another form. Sadly.
