Yesterday's fiction can be today's reality.

The are many options for new events... 3rd World War, pandemic disease reducing global population by millions, holy war - west against islam, another terror attack... the list goes on and on.

And yes I've heard of alien invasion event. It's documented and it's called "Project Bluebeam". Staged attacks are NWO tactic to create a global problem like war, global warming and other things to speed up the process of a globalisation.
