So I'm recording at home and want to get a Devy type of vocal sound.

Anyone have any experience recreating some of Dev's vocal tones in their recordings?

What FX or preamps/mic combinations did you use? How the hell does he do that??? it's so thick and massive.

Anyone know what he uses in the devlab? I saw the videos of course of him doing vox into a Shure SM7B. I've found screaming type vocals translate a lot better with dynamic mics rather than condensers.

What do ya'll think?

i'm kinda playing the guessing game here
but it seems that the biggest trick he does for sounding like there are 500 simultaneous tracks of vocals at the same time is.......... recording all of them!

If i'm not mistaken, great part of harmonic and thick-layered vox in music, when well produced, involve a ton of actual layers, and not that much effect. Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, for example, has 18 vocal tracks in harmony, in parts (and it doesn't even SOUND like that, just add to the texture).

i could also be completely wrong and he could do them recording only once in a cheap headset microphone through a Zoom 505 harmonizer.

Or perhaps the same recorded vocal track copy-pasted a few times but on each copy some sort of different effect is applied. Or he could really record himself that much yeah. I know for the parts he did on Ayreon's The Human Equation he submitted sometimes over 20 vocal tracks for each song, even though his parts in those songs are limited.

Am I retarded or do not many vocalists post on this board?
I had to trek back a thousand pages to hear some.
So soon as you get rich 'n layered Devy vox effect down hook us up with a song or two. I'd love to hear a human being's voice lol.

Amen. I'm working on it. Getting some cool stuff with layering keys behind the vocal lines, I'll try and post something this weekend.

don't really know if this happens to vox, but if you use the exact same track over itself many times, you'd probably get a weaker overall sound, because of phase cancelling. And also, it would sound like some regular harmonizing effect, so it'd be easier to just record one track after all.

but once again, i could be talking bullshit. What the hell, can some of the good producers of the board give us a light here?

Hi :)

My guess would be just a brute force method of recording a shitload of tracks. It's generally what I do and the sound (mix-wise, not vocal tone, quite obviously) is similar and quite inspired by Dev's vocal mixing. For example, one verse recorded three times with one at normal volume in the center, one slightly to each side and dropped in volume a bit, and then two harmony tracks also panned slightly and a bit quieter. Often I'll just record about 6-10 tracks of the exact same verse and layer them with one mixed louder and more centered than the rest so it sounds very thick and dense but still cohesive and focused.

well I haven't done much recording for a while now at least vocally...

http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/5/4/1 ... %20vox.mp3 (devy covers

I did a track of 4 devy excepts 6 months ago and I like to think I did somewhat of a good job esp on the screaming bits and maybe not so good on clean vocals. I think as far as singing and screaming goes, i've improved alot since then and i'm going to be recording again soon (maybe i'll do another take) I'm on a pretty tight budget right now and what I do is run an SM57 thru my digitech (as a preamp) into my computer via usb.

also i have an opeth cover of drapery falls http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/5/4/1 ... %20sss.mp3

First, before you even think of recording, try to get the absolute BEST sound you can get just singing straight into a mic into a speaker or even without a mic or speaker. If you get something very desirable that way, then you're GUARANTEED to get a satisfactory sound when recording. I use Sonar 7 right now and I take alot of time experimenting with the many eqs/filters to get a desirable sound.

I haven't tried layering screams/growls yet, but sometimes i do layer clean vocals...
